Marietta College was well represented at the Spring 2024 meeting of the Eastern Great Lakes Section (EGLS) of the American Physical Society (APS) in April at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. The title of the conference was “Physics and Industry.”
All four faculty members — Drs. Ann Bragg, Craig Howald, Dennis Kuhl, and Joseph Smith — attended, along with eight students.
“Attending and presenting at a professional conference is a valuable experience for our students while they are undergraduates,” said Dr. Kuhl, Chair of the Physics Department. “In the Marietta College Physics Program, all students have this opportunity. It helps prepare them for graduate school if that is their goal. More generally, it helps them to build confidence in a professional setting.”
Five students presented their research during the poster session. Those students were:
- Nick Haught ’24 (Marietta, Ohio): PIC Simulations to Investigate the Influence of Initial Target Conditions on Short-Pulse Laser Neutron Production.
- Aaron Rohr ’24 (Mogadore, Ohio): Fractional Resistivity Change Of Au(111) Thin Films Dosed With Diethyl Disulfide.
- Lucas Young ’25 (Marietta, Ohio): Simulations of Interference Effects of Dual Laser Pulse Plasma Interactions.
- Aditya Shah ’25 (Birjunj, Nepal): Meta-Analysis of Laser-Ion Acceleration.
- Colin Walters ’25 (Hilliard, Ohio): Nanostructured Materials for Advanced Rechargeable Battery Systems.
The other students who attended were Madeline Aszalos ’25 (Sharon, Pennsylvania), Kaitlyn Stewart ’26 (Sunbury, Ohio), and Hiroki Yokoyama ’24 (Yokohama Kanagawa, Japan).
Dr. Bragg gave a presentation titled Creating a Short Textbook with Accompanying Jupyter Notebooks for a Non-Calculus-Based Astrophysics Course, and Dr. Smith gave a presentation about Kinetic Simulations of Intense Laser-Dielectric Interactions.
