CAMPUS CONNECTION
This 60-minute program started following September 11, 2001, following
the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and shortly after
Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. Mike McNamara
served as moderator for that first program, which was engineered
by Ralph Matheny, and the guests included representatives of the College
Administration. Not only did they have an opportunity to share their
reaction to the day's events, but perhaps even more importantly, Campus
Connection provided an outlet to advise listeners of the counseling
services available to faculty, staff and students, along with the times
and places for memorials that were being scheduled on campus and throughout
the Marietta community.
Following
that special broadcast, Campus Connection became a regular weekly program
on WMRT Radio. Tom Hodson joined McNamara as
the co-host/producer for the regularly scheduled broadcast that could
be heard from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each Thursday, with a thirty-minute
edited version airing in drive-time that same evening.
More than
100 guests appeared on Campus Connection, including Marietta College
faculty, staff, alumni and students, who frequently filled in to serve
as a guest host. Often students would also sit in on the show as 'visiting
reporters' and use this news magazine as a source for upcoming stories
in The Marcolian.
Local and
regional government officials were also featured in one of the four,
15-minute segments, along with representatives from several campus organizations,
including Washington State Community College. The guest list also included
several who were either appearing on campus or at a function in the
Mid Ohio Valley, like author Dan Moldea, recently retired CBS News Corespondent
Doug Poling and entertainer Chuck Mangione.
Now under
the direction of Marilee Morrow, Campus Connection
continues to expand and this semester it is entirely student-driven.
In addition a segment is edited for use at half-time of the Pioneer
football broadcasts on WMRT Radio and mariettaonline.com.
