Research Award

The research award recognizes a faculty member for a significant contribution to his or her discipline, typically through a refereed publication (e.g. a book or seminal article) or juried creative product (e.g. exhibition or performance, such as one based on juried audition).

Selection of award recipients will be made by the Faculty Development Committee. (In the event that a member of the Faculty Development Committee is nominated for a research award, he or she will not participate in the selection procedure.) The recipients will be recognized at the Founders Day ceremony in February.

The research product (e.g. book, article, exhibition, performance) will have been produced up to three years prior to the time the award is made, according to the following timetable:

Award Date Publication, Exhibition, Performance date
Feb. 2007 Jan. 1, 2004 - Dec. 31, 2006
Feb. 2008 Jan. 1, 2005 - Dec. 31, 2007
Feb. 2009 Jan. 1, 2006 - Dec. 31, 2008

A faculty member may not receive the research award more than once for the same product.

Application Procedure

Faculty members can be nominated by any member of the college community, and self-nomination is acceptable.  Submit application electronically to the Faculty Development Committee Chair (luding.tong@marietta.edu).  Alternatively, forward 10 hard copies to Luding Tong, c/o Modern Languages Department (if sent through campus mail) or Thomas 308 (if hand delivered).

The application for a research award must include:

  • a brief letter of nomination stating the name of the nominee and specifying the research product for which the applicant is being nominated.
  • a one page (maximum) abstract summarizing the research and how it contributes to the discipline.
  • a supporting letter from the department chair or other authority in the discipline who should explain to the committee the significance of the contribution and the nature of the venue of publication or exhibition or performance of the creative product.
  • a copy of the publication or tangible evidence of the product (e.g. photographs of an exhibition). Only one copy is necessary. This will be returned to the applicant after the decision has been made.

It is also recommended that the application include supplementary supporting material such as review(s) of the product.
