Pedagogy Committee

The Pedagogy Committee was formed by Provost Sue DeWine in the fall of 2005 in order to develop a teaching workshop centered on the issues of critical thinking and engaged teaching.

Ultimately, the committee planned for, and carried out, a two-week teaching workshop from May 22 through June 1, 2006. This workshop, attended by approximately twenty full- and part-time college faculty, included contributions from Gerald Nosich (Foundation for Critical Thinking), Toby Fulwiler (Univesity of Vermont), Charlie Blaich (Wabash College), Stephen Kopp (Marshall University), and Milton Cox (Miami University of Ohio).

Since that time, the committee has undergone a few minor membership changes, and has expanded its role on the overall campus landscape. In addition to planning a follow-up teaching workshop in the summer of 2007, the committee has reached out in other related areas:

  • Organized and conducted a one-day workshop centered on student learning communities (January 17, 2007).
  • Conducted a faculty forum (February 23, 2007) as part of an ongoing attempt to promote engaged teaching approaches across the entire campus.
  • Reviewed grant applications and made recommendations to the Provost for funding a number of engaged teaching ideas. See "Recent Grants" tab.

It is the committee's overall goal to promote engaged teaching, active learning, and cross-discipline communication between faculty members in an attempt to improve the overall learning opportunities for the college's student population. The committee welcomes your suggestions in each of these areas. Please contact Rob McManus, chair (or another member of the pedagogy committee) with your suggestions or comments.
