Requirements for the Athletic Training Education Program
Athletic Training is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of
Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and requires 130 semester hours of coursework.
Admission into the Athletic Training Education Program
Application for admission into the Athletic Training Education Program begins during the fall semester of the sophomore year. The quota of applicants accepted and enrolled in the program is limited by the faculty/student ratio established by the Joint Review Committee Programs in Athletic Training (JRC-AT) and CAATE, in regards to
the student's clinical field experience, and the highly individualized nature of the program.
Admission to the program includes the following criteria:
- An accumulative 2.75 grade point average in SPTM 210, 211, 212, 304, BIOL 203, 212;
- A minimum of 130 "directed observation" clinical hours prior to admission;
- Reference evaluations from Marietta College faculty, staff, administrators, coaches, former employees, and instructors;
- Interview with selected members of the Athletic Training Interview Committee;
- Demonstration of skills and traits that are critical for the successful entry-level certified athletic trainer (e.g., dependability, responsibility, initiative, leadership, communications skills);
- Letter of application stating why the student wants to enter the program;
- Evidence of current First Aid and CPR certification;
- Evidence of Physical Examination by a physician;
- Evidence of vaccinations and immunizations;
- Verification that the student understood and meets the Technical Standards for admission to the Athletic Training Program.
Students not accepted into the program may re-apply the following semester.
For additional information, a student should consult the Athletic Training Education Program Student Handbook and the Department Chair.
Students transferring into Marietta College and wanting to major
in Athletic Training, must take the same core courses(SPTM 210,211,212,304,
BIO 203, 212) required by all students to gain admission into the Athletic
Training Education program.
Postgraduate opportunities with the Athletic Training major include athletic training, exercise science, physical therapy, medical school, and physician assistant programs.

Athletic Training Education Policies
Graduation Requirement
A student must achieve a
minimum 2.67 overall GPA in the required Athletic Training major
courses.
Clinical Field Experiences
Once admitted into the Athletic Training Education Program, students
are required to fulfill a minimum of four clinical field experiences.
Students will be assigned to an ACI (Approved Clinical Instructor)
during the four field experiences. These field experiences consist
of a lower extremity intensive rotation, a upper extremity rotation,
a equipment intensive rotation, and a general medical rotation.
These rotations will be completed on-campus, and off campus. Students
must give priority to the fulfillment of all clinical commitments,
which means holding down a part-time job or participating in athletics
difficult, but not impossible. Students are expected to assume responsibility
for their own transportation to various clinical assignments that
are off campus.
Uniforms
Students must purchase staff clothing items as designated by the Department of Sports Medicine. These items (i.e., polo shirts, sweatshirts, T-shirts, etc.) must be worn by students while completing clinical experiences. Please see any of the Sports Medicine faculty for specific details. Clothing items may be purchased from the Department Secretary.
