Memorable Sports moments of the past 175 years

In its 175-year history, Marietta College has celebrated scores of special moments on the field, on the court, and on the water. Though this list is impressive, it’s a sure thing that our student-athletes will continue to add to it for generations to come. Go Pioneers!

  • 1871 – Rowing club forms to become first organized sport at Marietta
  • 1874 – Baseball becomes first varsity sport in Marietta history
  • 1892 – Marietta’s first season of football
  • 1901 – Marietta’s first season of men’s basketball
  • Nov. 29, 1906 – Petey Gilman throws a 52-yard pass, one of the first official forward passes in football.
  • 1926 – Marietta joins the Ohio Athletic Conference
  • Dec. 19, 1929 – Men’s basketball falls 22-17 to Muskingum in first athletic event held in Ban Johnson Field House.
  • May 1931 – Marietta rows its first intercollegiate eight-oared race on the Schuylkill River
  • 1934 – Men’s rowing wins inaugural Dad Vail Championship
  • 1936 – Men’s basketball wins its first OAC championship
  • Sept. 1954 – Marietta joins the NCAA
  • May 11, 1963 – Men’s rowing wins second Dad Vail Championship
  • May 14, 1966 – Men’s rowing wins third Dad Vail Championship
  • May 13, 1967 – Men’s rowing wins back-to-back and fourth overall Dad Vail Championship
  • 1974 – Marietta defeats Glenville 44-38 in first varsity women’s basketball game.
  • June 1, 1981 – Baseball defeats Ithaca (N.Y.) 14-12 to capture first NCAA Division III National Championship.
  • June 7, 1983 – Baseball routes Otterbein 36-8 to win second NCAA Division III National Championship.
  • 1984 – Men’s soccer ties for OAC title
  • June 2, 1986 – Baseball rallies past Ithaca (N.Y.) 11-6 to win third NCAA Division III National Championship.
  • 1990 – Cathy Clark sets OAC women’s basketball scoring record (2,311)
  • Oct. 5, 1996 – Dante Brown runs for NCAA record 441 yards against Baldwin-Wallace.
  • May 4, 1996 – Softball wins OAC Tournament and becomes College’s first women’s program to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
  • May 28-30, 1999 – Rowing becomes first women’s program to compete at a National Championship
  • Nov. 11, 2000 – Kenneth Sasu sets OAC career rushing record with 4,727 yards.
  • May 25, 2001 – Matt DeSalvo strikes out NCAA Division III Championship record 19 batters in win over Salisbury (Md.)
  • Nov. 8, 2003 – Don Schaly becomes first person in Marietta College history to have his jersey retired.
  • May 10, 2003 – Matt DeSalvo sets NCAA strikeout record (603) by striking out three straight against Heidelberg
  • May 8, 2004 – Women’s rowing wins D-II/D-III Dad Vail Championship
  • May 13, 2006 – Men’s rowing wins fifth Dad Vail Championship
  • May 30, 2006 – Baseball tops Wheaton (Mass.) 7-2 to win record-tying fourth NCAA Division III National Championship.
  • May 11, 2007 – Softball defeats defending champion Rutgers-Camden (N.J.) 4-3 to earn first NCAA Tournament win in program history.
  • May 21-23, 2009 – Marietta hosts the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Don Drumm Stadium.
