With summer break winding down, Marietta College’s new students were formally welcomed to the Marietta College community through the annual Matriculation Ceremony held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009 on Fenton Court in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.
This marked the seventh consecutive fall the College has matriculated at least 375 new students. Marietta College’s Office of Admission expected around 450 total new students to join the already more than 1,000 returning students enrolled in one of the 42 majors offered that fall.
The class of 2013, which was expected to be close to 400 freshmen, began arriving on campus earlier that day as the College welcomes them into their Residence Halls during the annual Freshman Move-in Day.
Orientation began at 2 p.m. with registration and schedule changes taking place in the Academic Resource Center in Andrews Hall. Following Matriculation, families and new students were invited to a reception to be held at the Kremer Amphitheatre. Then, at 10 p.m., there were mandatory Residence Hall meetings followed by pizzas in the lobbies where students got a chance to meet their hall mates for the next year.
On Friday, Aug. 21, new students had a full day’s schedule that included meeting each other in their new freshman seminar classes and a presentation by Delatorra McNeal in the Alma McDonough Auditorium where students learned the 5 Ps of Collegiate Success. The day was capped off by "Casino Night," which took place on a riverboat on the Ohio River. Students enjoyed food, music and casino games while onboard.
Orientation continued on Saturday with more Freshman Year Seminar Classes and Brent Scarpo’s program "Why Do You Hate Me?" an in-depth program focusing on ways to deal with the issues of hate on a college campus. The evening activities featured a Creative Dating program by Frank Kitchen that explored dating, relationships, and the issues with men and women. A showing of the movie "Hitch" at 10 p.m. followed this.
Sunday wrapped up orientation with a class picture at 1:30 p.m. and an All-Campus Barbecue that took place on the Christy Mall at 5 p.m.
