Animals

Humane Society of the Ohio Valley

The organization:  The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley is a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to house and adopt animals that are strays or no longer wanted by their owners. 
How can I volunteer? 

  • Work with the animals-bathing, walking, feeding, cleaning cages, general office work

Length of time: Volunteers are needed regularly.  Our hours are from 8:30-5 (M-F), 7:30-4 (Sat), or 8:30-3 (Sun).  Come any time!
NOTE:  You do not have to schedule a time; come any time during our operating hours.  However, you will need to complete a volunteer application.  You can do this online at http://www.hsov.org/volunteerform/nvform.html

Disabilities

HAVAR, Inc.

The organization:  HAVAR provides community-based support to citizens with developmental disabilities through a variety of services. 
How can I volunteer?

  • Computer tasks such as creating forms, charts, and graphs
  • Clerical work such as maintaining/auditing files
  • Basic yard work
  • Training (12-15 hours) is available if volunteers wish to go inside homes of people needing services and interact on a one-on-one basis

Length of time: Volunteers needed regularly throughout the semester.  Office hours are from 8-4pm with available evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Elderly

O'Neill Senior Center

The O'Neill Senior Center provides a variety of activities and programs for seniors. The center coordinates life enrichment programs such as art classes, exercise programs, dancing, trips, games, health screenings, speakers, workshops, discussion groups, in addition to providing access to computers for seniors who wish to use them. The center also has an Adult Day Program where the center cares for seniors whose families or caretakers work during the day or need a break.

How can I volunteer?

Volunteers can serve at basically any level. The center is in great need of a volunteer(s) to be a computer lab assistant, which could include showing seniors how to turn on a computer, how to type using a keyboard, or how to access e-mail.

  • Be a computer lab assistant (Mon., Wed., Thurs., 1pm-3pm)
  • Help with showing Friday afternoon movies (Every Friday, 1pm-3pm)
  • Assisting with chair volleyball as a scorekeeper and ball chaser (2 volunteers needed Wed. and Fri except for the 2nd Wed. of every month, 10am-11am)
  • Assist with Adult Day Care (Mon-Fri, 8am-3pm)
  • Party and event hosting
  • Designing posters and flyers for bulletin boards
  • Updating event calendars
  • Working with seniors in Adult Day Care
  • Visiting with seniors
  • Office help
  • Outside cleaning/light yard work

Humanitarian Aid

Washington County American Red Cross

The organization:  The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. 
How can I volunteer? 

  • Office assistant work (organizing, answering phone calls, day-to-day business activities)
  • Help with putting PowerPoint presentations together
  • Public event assistants helping with event set-up, registration, and logistics
  • Writing articles
  • On-call volunteers
  • Assisting with the organization of fundraisers-March is Red Cross month
  • Train to become a Health & Safety Instructor
  • Landscaping/gardening at the chapter house
  • Housekeeping/cleaning
  • Projects on an as needed basis

Washington-Morgan Community Action

Washington-Morgan Community Action is a private, non-profit community based service organization that serves both Washington and Morgan County, Ohio.  Washington-Morgan Community Action provides an array of services including public transportation, housing repair/Weatherization, home heating and cooling assistance, health services, employment and training, senior nutrition, Head start and many more. The mission of Washington-Morgan Community Action is to help low income individuals and families achieve growth and success.

How can I volunteer?

Volunteers are needed in various capacities including internships. Internships and volunteer experience for students can be completed in the following areas

  • Food Service (Senior Nutrition)
  • Early Education
  • Marketing/Public Event Assistance
  • Project Development/Grant Writing
  • Social Work
  • Secret Santa (Oct-December)
  • Backpack/School Supply Distribution (July- August)

Hours of Operation: Monday- Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
Length of time: Flexible and willing to work around students’ schedule
Number of volunteers need: 1-2 per internship experience; volunteer experiences 1-5 or larger groups may be used when needed

The Appalachian Nutrition Network

The organization: ANN is certified by the Ohio Department of Education to operate child nutrition programs in three areas. Summer Food Service provides free meals to low income children in Ohio and West Virginia. After School Meals are provided in nine counties in Ohio. Finally we work with family child care providers offering meal subsidy, menu planning, and educational programs.

How can I volunteer?

  • General office work and data entry.

Youth/Education

The Right Path of Washington County

The organization The Right Path for Washington County, our community coalition. We are a support system for youth and families and provide alternative activities, instead of drugs, alcohol or things that put them at risk, for 6th-12th grade students.  The Right Path is located at 344 Muskingum Dr. here in Marietta.
How can I volunteer?  . 

  • We host dances and swim parties in the summer months and a monthly event during the school year. We can use help planning and chaperoning events.
  • A resource library is being developed.

The organization:  The Ely Chapman Education Foundation is a non-profit educational organization designed to provide educational enrichment for groups with diverse backgrounds.
How can I volunteer?  . 
Librarian-Shelve books, organize incoming book donations.  Times flexible.
The Garden Club-a group of students interested in gardening meets each Friday from 4:30-5:30
The S.U.N.S.H.I.N.E. Learning Station - (Follows Marietta City School Schedule)
Mon. – Fri. 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM Multiple positions available Tutors work only 1 day a week

  • Tutor elementary school children in reading, math, writing, homework help.

Middle School Program - (Follows Marietta City School Schedule)
Mon. – Thurs. 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM (5:00 PM) Multiple positions available. Tutors work 1 day/week

  • Tutor Middle School Children in basics of reading, math, and homework. 

Performing Arts Youth Theatre Program
Tuesdays 4:00 PM – 5:45 PM

  • Assist Drama teacher as needed with the production of plays put on by K-8 students. 

West African Museum & Underground Railroad History
Time: Flexible –any time the building is open. (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM Mon. – Fri.)

  • Photograph, document and research the different artifacts in the museum. 

Boy Scout Troop 231
Time: Thursdays (6:30 PM – 8:00 PM)

  • Volunteers are needed regularly

The Betsey Mills Club

The organization:  The Betsey Mills is a community center that offers a variety of services, including wellness programs and infant/toddler care.
How can I volunteer?  . 

  • Conduct various learning activities or arts and crafts with infants or toddlers.
  • Assist with teaching self-help skills to children of all ages.

Length of time: Time commitment varies.  Activities range from 9am-4pm.

The Marietta Family YMCA

The organization: The Marietta Family YMCA provides programs for all ages (2 ½ to 105+ years old) to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
How can I volunteer?

  • Teen Digital Filmmaking
  • Coaches and referees for basketball, floor hockey, flag football, swimming, and soccer for all ages.
  • Assistance with tumbling and jump roping programs.
  • After school activities daily from 2:30-5
  • Pre-school teachers and teachers’ aids.
  • Before and after school teachers and aids.
  • CSI Marietta forensics program
  • Site coordinators for youth sports (Saturdays; can lead to paid positions)
  • Swim coach assistants for 8 and under, 9-12, 13-18 years old.
  • Leading hikes in Kris Mar woods; experienced hikers only please
  • Office workers
  • Cleaning, maintenance, and painting.
  • Yard work (hedge trimming, leaf blowing, lawn edging)

Length of time: Varies on a project, program, or semester basis. Depending upon your level of interest, summer time employment may be available as a camp counselor.

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Washington County

The organization:  The Boys & Girls Club provides a positive place for young boys and girls to learn and grow.
How can I volunteer?  Volunteers are needed most to serve as mentors for the young members.

  • Volunteer to be a mentor and positive role model
  • Helping youth with homework
  • Helping to run programs
  • Hang out with the Club members

Length of time:  It’s important to note that the Club would like volunteers that come in for short amounts of time (1-2 hours per day, ideally at least once a week) rather for longer periods. 

  • Monday-Friday from 3:00-5:00pm is when the most number of kids are in the Club

EVE, Incorporated

The organization:  EVE, Incorporated provides 24-hour service for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
How can I volunteer?
·         Crisis back-up volunteers to assist in screening of individuals before admission into Eve
·         Volunteers to answer hotline calls while crisis-back up workers are screening individuals
·         Hotline workers to answer incoming calls
·         Donation collection volunteers
·         Internship possibilities
·         Office workers

Length of time: Time commitment varies.  Crisis back-up volunteers will be on call one week at a time.
