Get the most marketable skills available -- leadership skills. No matter what your career plans are, the McDonough Leadership Program offers you an excellent way to gain an understanding of leadership and the practical abilities that go with it. Through Marietta's McDonough Center for Leadership and Business, you'll learn about the nature of leadership, undertake an extensive study of leadership development, and train to be a leader. Plus, you'll graduate with a degree from one of the most comprehensive leadership development programs in American higher education today. In fact, the Marietta Model that we've developed is nationally recognized as a cutting-edge approach in the study and practice of leadership within a liberal-arts context.

Leadership Studies Abroad

Watch leadership in action through our Leadership Studies Abroad course. You'll travel to countries experiencing significant change and meet with prominent leaders in government and business to discuss the challenges they face. This course is open to students in the McDonough Leadership Program, but students may also take it for their major in history, international business management, modern languages, or political science.

Requirements for a Minor
Leadership 101, 103, 140, 201, 203, 240, 340 and 401, one additional three-hour of leadership-designated course, completion of noncredit summer internship or study abroad experience approved by the Dean of the McDonough Center, and a total of 100 hours of approved community service. Study abroad is defined as an extensive summer, semester or year-long experience approved by the College's Office of Study Abroad. The minor requires 21 credit hours.

The McDonough Center for Leadership and Business offers a course in global leadership studies, which provides our leadership students -- as well as majors in history, international business management, modern languages, or political science -- with the chance to study leadership in countries undergoing significant change. You can also gain international experience through service-learning opportunities in countries such as China, Australia, Mexico, the Philippines, and South Africa.

McDonough Student Advisory Council (McSAC) serves as a liaison between the McDonough leadership students and the dean of the McDonough Center, promotes participation, encourages commitment and accountability, and allows for the practice of leadership skills and behaviors.

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is the national leadership honor society that selects students showing superior scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character.

The American International Association is open to any member of the Marietta College community who wishes to engage new cultures and meet interesting people. The organization increases positive interactions and understanding between American and international students at Marietta and supports the values of globalization by exposing students to different cultures.

The Model United Nations Club is devoted to learning about international political leadership issues by preparing and participating in inter-collegiate simulations, where students role-play delegates from different countries in committees of the United Nations.

The Spanish Club promotes interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. It is open to all Marietta students.

Successful Alumni

The McDonough Leadership Program prepares you for a variety of career paths, including large and small business enterprises, graduate school, non-profit organizations, foreign service, diplomacy, the law, and public service.

The Carl L. Broughton Scholarship is awarded to superior students planning to enter the world of business and who intend to participate in programs for business through the McDonough Center.

The Sherrill and Diana Drake Cleland Scholarship is given to a student majoring in International Leadership Studies or minoring in Leadership Studies.

The Geon Leadership Scholarship recognizes emerging leaders at Marietta College, especially qualified students in the McDonough Leadership Program.

The Study Abroad Grant is awarded to a full-time student to help offset the cost of studying abroad.

The Spirit of McDonough Award is a certificate of recognition given to students in the first and second years of the McDonough Leadership Program who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to citizen-leadership development.

The William O. Whetsell Community Service Award recognizes a graduating leadership student who has exemplified the service mission of the McDonough Center in the Marietta community. This is a cash prize.

The Bernard P. McDonough Leadership Prize is a cash prize given to a graduating leadership student who has distinguished himself or herself as a citizen-leader throughout his or her four years in the McDonough Leadership Program.
