Spanish
Today's global society demands an understanding of world cultures and an ability to communicate with non-English speakers. Majoring in Spanish gives you both. Learn Spanish -- the fourth most widely spoken language -- and you'll know a language spoken by over 300 million people worldwide. Even before you leave campus, Marietta's diverse community will give you the chance to practice with native speakers. Majors are required to spend at least one semester in an approved study abroad program in a country where Spanish is spoken as the dominant language, and must complete a set of structured assignments related to their study abroad experience to fulfill the capstone requirement.
Marietta is also a great place to expand your foreign language knowledge. Along with a major and a minor in Spanish, we offer a minor in French and instruction in Chinese, Japanese, and (Brazilian) Portuguese.

With a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the Department of Modern Languages, you'll be prepared to work anywhere in the world. You can start by teaching in Chinese and Brazilian high schools and colleges. Marietta's unique agreements with these countries enable certified graduates to live and work there as English teachers.

Requirements for a Minor
Eighteen hours, including: Spanish 201, 202, 301; at least one course in Spanish
culture numbered 300 or above; at least one course in Spanish literature numbered
300 or above; three (3) credit hours of electives as approved by the Modern
Languages Department. (Note: Spanish 101 and 102 may not be used as part of
these electives.)
Study Abroad is recommended but not required for the Spanish minor.

Because of Marietta's affiliation with the Institute of European Studies, the
Institute of Asian Studies, Central College, and the East Central College Consortium,

Clubs & Organizations
Students showing achievement in the study of Spanish may join the national
collegiate Hispanic honor society, Sigma Delta Pi.
Phi Sigma Iota, the international foreign-language honor society, elects members from among outstanding students of foreign languages and literature.
The American International Association is open to any member of the Marietta College community who wishes to learn new cultures and meet interesting people. The organization increases the understandings between American and International students at Marietta and supports the values of globalization by exposing students to different cultures.
The Model United Nations Club is devoted to learning about international politics by preparing and participating in intercollegiate simulations, where students role-play delegates from different countries in committees of the United Nations.
The Spanish Club promotes interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. It is open to all students.

Scholarship Opportunities
The David Edward Beach Memorial Scholarship provides assistance to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in the humanities.
The Manley Memorial Scholarship assists juniors or seniors whose major is in the humanities.
The Ira Owen Wade-Mabel Hamilton Wade Scholarships are awarded to juniors or seniors who have established themselves as superior students in the humanities.
The Study Abroad Grant is awarded on a competitive basis to a full-time student to help offset the cost of studying abroad.
The Megan E. Collins Memorial Award in Spanish is a cash award given annually to a female Spanish major.
