Inquiry Skills

Inquiry is the systematic process of asking questions about and examining issues, objects, data or works through the collection and analysis of evidence and observations as a basis to make informed conclusions. Inquiry skills lead to knowledge of and experience in selecting topics, researching information, and generating hypotheses and thesis statements. The practice of these skills generates familiarity with the characteristics of investigative design, analysis, and interpretation of a variety of disciplines.

Communication Skills

Written communication is the development and expression of ideas in writing. It also involves learning to develop and express content within both the major and the general education curriculum. It can involve working with many different writing technologies, and mixing texts, data, and images. Written communication abilities develop through iterative experiences across the curriculum. Oral communication is prepared, purposeful presentation designed to increase knowledge, to foster understanding, or to promote change in the listeners' attitudes, values, beliefs, or behaviors.

Quantitative Reasoning

Quantitative reasoning is a skill set which empowers individuals to work comfortably with numerical data. When encountering quantitative problems, it is essential to be able to understand the relevant assumptions, limitations, and calculations, and be able to use these to make decisions, evaluate alternative points of view, and communicate key results in appropriate formats. These skills also include the ability to create and comprehend quantitative arguments including graphs, tables and equations offered to support conclusions.

>Competence in cultural and social diversity is the ability to critically analyze systems that shape human relationships, and the ability to engage with and include individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds and abilities. Diversity includes categories that go beyond race, ethnicity, and national origin.

Practice of Ethical and Responsible Citizenship

Ethical reasoning is the thoughtful concern about what is right and wrong. Responsible citizenship is the attempt to make a positive impact upon one's community – locally, nationally, and/or globally. The practice of ethical and responsible citizenship arises when individuals confront challenges, choices, and ethical dilemmas requiring value judgments. This practice requires skill in assessing and articulating various ethical positions, analyzing the social contexts of problems, and considering the ramifications of various courses of action for oneself as well as the community.

Artistic Literacy

Artistic literacy is the result of exploring the technical and theoretical aspects of the creative process to foster an aesthetic sensibility that leads to critical analysis, evaluation, and engagement with the arts. This exploration includes experience in developing technique through the progressive application of interpretation or performance skills. Literacy is also the result of developing a basic understanding of the terms and concepts employed in forming critical responses to the arts and integrating analysis with historical and contextual knowledge.
