Introducing President Dr. Joseph W. Bruno

President Dr. Joseph W. Bruno

To the Marietta College community:

I am pleased to inform you that today, Dec. 14, 2011, Dr. Joseph W. Bruno was elected by the Marietta College Board of Trustees as the 18th president of Marietta, to begin work on July 1, 2012.

The Trustees and the search committee were impressed with Dr. Bruno during our interviews and his visit to campus last month. The feedback we received across campus was overwhelmingly supportive and we are pleased Dr. Bruno has accepted Marietta College's offer to be our next president.

It has been a real pleasure getting to know Joe and his wife, Diane, and the Trustees are looking forward to working with them in the foreseeable future. I am confident you will be pleased to work with them as well, and I know you will give them a special Marietta College welcome.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank fellow Trustee Brent McCurdy '68, who chaired the search committee, as well as the other 14 members of that group. They put in a lot of hours and made a personal commitment to make sure Marietta College found the right successor to President Jean A. Scott.

Dr. Bruno is a respected leader and partner on the Wesleyan University campus. Located in Middletown, Conn., Wesleyan is one of the nation's most distinguished liberal arts colleges and has about 2,900 students.

Dr. Bruno is a Professor of Chemistry and he served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Wesleyan from 2006-10. There he supervised the teaching and research of 330 faculty members in 41 departments and programs. He has also worked with four Wesleyan presidents in his 27 years and has helped to shape academic initiatives at the University.

He has been a member of the Wesleyan faculty since 1984, and during that time has developed a reputation as being a collaborative partner across campus, as well as an entrepreneur. Dr. Bruno has secured numerous grants and significant gifts to Wesleyan University in his career. He also is a lecturer and the author of more than 60 publications.

After earning his Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry from Northwestern University in 1983, Bruno spent two postdoctoral years at Indiana University before joining the Wesleyan faculty in 1984. He received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Augustana College in 1978. He received tenure at Wesleyan in 1991.

Join me in welcoming Dr. and Mrs. Bruno to Marietta.

Best regards,

Barbara Perry Fitzgerald '73
Chair of the Board of Trustees
