Presidential Inauguration
Inaugurating a leader has only happened at this college 17 times. Witness a historic event as Marietta installs Dr. Joseph W. Bruno.
It's a tradition that hearkens back to the first graduating class at Marietta College.
In 1838, as four men earned the first degrees conferred by the then-fledging institution, another man, ready to inspire the College's first steps, stood before a hopeful community. Though the Rev. Joel Harvey Linsley was tapped as Marietta's first President on March 6, 1835, it wasn't until the first graduation celebration that the Board of Trustees swore in the College's first president.
On Oct. 12, as various classes of alumni return to campus for the 2012 Homecoming Weekend, a united front of students, alumni, faculty, administrators, dignitaries and community members will stand behind a new leader when Dr. Joseph W. Bruno formally takes his oath of office as the 18th President of Marietta College.
Board of Trustees Chair Barbara Perry Fitzgerald '73 will install Dr. Bruno as President during the ceremony, which begins at 3 p.m. in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The event will feature Keynote Speaker Judith C. Brown. Following his oath, President Bruno will give his inaugural address.
In addition to the inauguration ceremony, guests are invited to attend a community reception follow in the lobby of Hermann Fine Arts Center.

Well Wishes for President Bruno
Congratulations on becoming a part of the Long Blue Line President Bruno! May your time at Marietta be as fulfilling and enriching of your life as my time there was for me. Good luck and may you lead Marietta into a successful next chapter of its story!
— Joshua P. Busser '09
As a former MC Director of Admission (1968-74) and an emeritus member of your Board of Trustees (1993-2004), I welcome you to a very special place in my heart. When you were selected I celebrated the fact that you are coming from one of the premier liberal arts colleges in America, THE Wesleyan. Being the old admission guy that I am, The Gatekeepers is one of my favorite reads. Here is hoping that some of that excellence will rub off on my own alma mater, maybe putting it at long last onto the road of becoming one of America's Carnegie I institutions, a place in the sun which it deserves. Here's to you and MC's first lady in wishing you both well in that wonderful Marietta environment. I look forward to meeting you in person, and hope that your travels may find you in the South Carolina lowcountry one day.
With best wishes,
— Ross W. Lenhart '66
It was great to meet you and your wife on Freshmen Thursday move in day. While Morgan and my wife Dawn were setting up the dorm room, I was outside sitting, watching other freshmen move in, and staying out of the girls' way. I never dreamed I would have the honor of meeting the President of the College, it kinda caught me off guard! We spoke for several minutes about Morgan, both her previous school years, and her college years to come. President Bruno and his wife seemed very interested in Morgan. I can't say that experience would have happened on any other campus. It reassured me, on that day, that we were leaving our daughter in good hands, and at the right place. Good luck President & Mrs. Bruno, Marietta College and the people of Marietta are lucky to have to you.
— Timothy N Spradling
Congratulations Dr. Bruno and family and welcome to The Long Blue Line. I wish that your time at Marietta will be full and exciting as the time that we spent there. I look forward to watching the progress and growth to the place we called home for so many years. On and Up.
