Marietta College is committed to offering programs of in-depth study that prepare students for both challenging careers and admission to well-respected graduate and professional schools. Marietta College offers majors, minors and other academic programs in those select areas that are consistent with the mission of the College and where it has the expertise and resources to meet or exceed baselines of excellence.

Undergraduate Programs

Communication

Mission

The Department of Communication is committed to promoting knowledge, criticism and practical application of human communication. We educate students to be critical observers of social problems, to participate effectively in public life as citizens, and to become involved in culturally diverse personal and professional relationships in their communities.

Goals

  • To encourage the development of student's critical and analytic abilities about both the process and consequences of human communication.
  • To create a stimulating learning environment based upon mutual respect, support, and collaborative learning.
  • To establish high standards of scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students in communication.
  • To deliver a curriculum which includes social scientific and rhetorical perspectives of human communication. To make students aware of diverse cultures and ways of thinking.
  • To foster students' communication skills.

Education

Mission

The mission of the Marietta College Education Department is to prepare "Educator Leaders for 21st Century Schools" by providing candidates with the experiences necessary to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to facilitate student learning. This mission coincides with the Marietta College goal to graduate students who are adept at critical analysis, problem solving, and the leadership skills required to translate what is learned into effective actions.

Goals

Through its undergraduate professional licensure programs and its advanced program in special education, the education department endeavors to provide candidates with the experiences which will enable them to become educator leaders who:

  • Demonstrate effective pedagogy through the use of appropriate and fair instructional practices, varied assessment tools, and technology for teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrate content knowledge in their discipline areas.
  • Demonstrate efficacy by believing all students can learn, understanding and respecting student diversity, and making accommodations to ensure that all students will learn.
  • Act as change agents who are willing to try new approaches to solve problems and who are willing to take risks to challenge the status quo.
  • Develop professional relationships which enable them to collaborate with colleagues, families, communities, and professional organizations for the purpose of facilitation student learning.
  • Engage in reflective practice including the ability to analyze current issues in education, teaching performance, and student learning.

EMA

Mission

Students enrolled in the Department of Economics, Management and Accounting will develop competencies in their specific fields of study. In addition, they will graduate with the essential analytical, problem solving, computer, and communication skills to excel in their chosen career or graduate studies. Upon their graduation, students also will have the necessary interpersonal skills to function as effective team players with people from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, students will be able to demonstrate competency in conducting research, a commitment to ethical and professional behavior, an understanding of the international marketplace, and an appreciation of the importance of lifelong learning.

Goals for Each Program

Accounting and Public Accounting

Students of accounting and public accounting will apply the basics of financial reporting and internal control, understand how managers use accounting information, appreciate how technology impacts the accounting profession, and possess basic skills to pass a professional examination.

 

Economics

Students of economics will acquire the theoretical and analytical knowledge necessary for understanding and evaluating economic issues and policies , in order to be informed decision makers and citizens in society.

 

Finance

Students of finance will understand the significance of accounting data, economic theory, and professional standards while appropriately applying financial tools in making decisions and recommendations associated with corporate finance, asset valuation, and portfolio management.

 

Human Resource Management

Students of human resources will understand that the one key competitive advantage an organization has today is its people, and that their role is both to give their employees the tools and support they need, and to give the organization the HR strategic input it requires.

 

International Business

Students of international business will have the analytical tools, the language skills, and the international experience to live and work either for short or extended periods in overseas business environments. They will be comfortable in other cultures and effective as managers in the increasingly global marketplace.

 

Management

Students of management will be equipped with the basic tools, critical understandings, and awareness of current developments to practice contemporary management; and will develop their skills in leadership, in order to create and adapt to change by leading and following others, effectively, in their management practices.

 

Management Information Systems

Students of management information systems will receive a comprehensive education in the analysis, design, development, and management of information systems, and understand how to leverage information technology for strategic business value.

 

Marketing

Students of marketing will understand that marketers provide an organization with an advantage by enabling it to meet the wants and needs of target markets in a competitive marketplace. Graduates must be able to assess those needs and design programs for meeting them while helping the organization to meet its financial goals.
