Marietta College is committed to offering programs of in-depth study that prepare students for both challenging careers and admission to well-respected graduate and professional schools. Marietta College offers majors, minors and other academic programs in those select areas that are consistent with the mission of the College and where it has the expertise and resources to meet or exceed baselines of excellence.
Undergraduate Programs
Modern Languages
Mission
To prepare graduates who are linguistically proficient and culturally literate by offering high quality programming in Chinese, English as a Second Language (ESL), French, Japanese, linguistics, and Spanish.
Goals
- Teach students to understand and use the grammar and vocabulary of the target language appropriate to language level.
Instruct students in the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening at an appropriate level in the target language.
- Teach students about the target culture.
- Provide majors and minors with an experience of literature in the target language.
- Prepare students adequately for the next level of language learning.
Music
Mission
The Edward E. MacTaggart Department of Music is committed to providing musical opportunities for both majors and non-majors and to graduating well-educated students who can successfully enter graduate programs in the field of music and musical theatre and who are prepared for entry-level employment within the profession.
Goals
- To provide students with a fundamental knowledge of music in the areas of history, performance, theory, and general musicianship.
- To provide students with an opportunity to synthesize these skills, components, and processes culminating in a final senior capstone experience.
- To provide both majors and non-majors a variety of ensemble opportunities through which they may apply performance skills and explore the music of a variety of cultures and historical periods.
- To provide non-majors with opportunities to develop both their applied skills and to gain a greater appreciation for the study and performance of music.
- To provide students with an environment in which they can explore and embrace their own social, personal, and artistic development.
Petroleum Engineering
Mission
To graduate at least fifteen well-educated baccalaureate petroleum engineers each year who are prepared for entry-level positions in the petroleum industry, graduate school, and life-long learning and professional development, and are capable of becoming professional engineers and leaders in the global petroleum industry.
Goals
- Provide students with a fundamental knowledge of petroleum engineering in the areas of drilling, production, reservoir engineering, and formation evaluation
- Provide students with an integrated, comprehensive design experience beginning with exposure to industry practice and exercises in the freshman year, leading to a capstone design experience in the senior year.
- Provide students with opportunities throughout the curriculum to develop good written and oral communication skills; problem solving and decision making skills; and computational and technological literacy.
- Provide students with a recognition and understanding of the professional and societal responsibilities associated with being a petroleum engineer.
- Provide students with opportunities to address global and multi-cultural issues, investigate models of social behavior and leadership, sharpen their aesthetic sense, and embrace their own social and personal development.
