Undergraduate Programs

Sports Medicine

Mission

The mission of the Sports Medicine department is to prepare students to become qualified professionals for employment, or graduate level education in Athletic Training, or in other Allied Health Care careers. While maintaining the liberal arts tradition, the department provides comprehensive exposure to the scientific, medical, and professional aspects of Athletic Training and Allied Health.

Goals

The primary educational goal of the Sports Medicine department is to insure our students are meeting the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) Educational Council clinical competencies and proficiencies. These educational competencies and proficiencies are divided into 12 main categories (Risk Management and Injury Prevention, Pathology of Injuries and Illnesses, Assessment and Evaluation, Acute Care of Injury and Illness, Pharmacology, Therapeutic Modalities, Therapeutic Exercise, General Medical Conditions and Disabilities, Nutrition, Psychosocial Intervention and Referral, Health Care Administration, Professional Development and Responsibilities).

Within each main category are a subset of competencies (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) and clinical proficiencies (decision making skills). The competencies and proficiencies are designed to prepare students to become Athletic Trainers in a wide variety of settings.

Another educational goal is to prepare students for the BOC (Board of Certification) national exam, and for our students to be at or above the national average first time passing rate for all three sections.

One of the requirements of an accredited program is for students to gain exposure to a wide variety of physicians and allied health care professionals. This requirement becomes one of the department's educational goals.
