Create an Academic Chair, Lectureship or Professorship

Endowment gifts are a way to combine a donor’s vision with Marietta College’s needs and objectives. They are the products of a dynamic and ongoing relationship between the donor and Marietta College. Working together, the College and the donor create an endowment that reflects a commonality of goals.

To guarantee that income from the endowment will always be sufficient to support the endowment purpose, minimum support levels for various types of endowments have been established. The following categories represent a starting point in the endowment process.

Endowed Seminar Series or Lectureship
A gift of $250,000 or more brings distinguished speakers to Marietta College. These funds provide opportunities for students and faculty to interact and develop relationships with the leaders and professionals in a variety of fields.

Permanent Named Professorship
A minimum of $250,000 will create an endowed professorship. The endowment provides the resources to reward a professor for past academic achievement and enables the professor to pursue new lines of research and innovative teaching methods. Income from the endowment provides funds for the holder’s salary, support staff, and travel expenses.

Endowed Visiting Professorship
A minimum of $500,000 will endow a visiting professorship in most academic areas. Income from the endowment allows the College to appoint someone from the business, academic or scientific community to a full-time faculty position for an academic year. Visiting professors provide increased opportunities to expose students to differing perspectives and opportunities for interaction.

Endowed Academic Chair
A minimum of $750,000 will endow an academic chair. Income from the endowment supplements the holder’s salary, provides funds for graduate assistants and support staff, course development and equipment.

Endowments can be established through an outright gift or through a variety of gift planning techniques. Sometimes a much more significant endowment gift can be established when advantage is taken of special gift plans.

Stanley Radford

Dr. Greg Delemeester is the Milton Friedman Chair in Economics, which has been funded through a trust established by Lester E. and the late Alice McCoy Merydith, alumnus and alumna of the College in the Classes of 1927 and 1928, respectively, of Sun City, Arizona.

The chair is named in honor of the internationally known economist, scholar, writer, and Nobel Prize winner. Additionally, the donors and the College sponsor the Friedman Lecture Series for faculty, students, and area residents. The first lecture in 1983 featured the honoree, Dr. Friedman.
