The final stop on the 2008-2009 regional event schedule for Marietta College's Alumni Association took place in Cincinnati on Thursday, April 30th. An enthusiastic gathering of more than 60 Pioneers re-connected with classmates, friends and their alma mater at Maggiano's at Kenwood 's Town Center.
Earlier in April equally excited alumni took advantage of visits to Cleveland and Columbus. Other regional event venues included a swing through North Carolina and Virginia in February that included gatherings in Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham and Richmond.
For all those who took time out of their busy schedules to join with us and celebrate the Navy Blue and White, please accept our sincere appreciation for your effort and support. Keep an eye on Trailblazer and Marietta, The Magazine of Marietta College for updates on special 175th anniversary editions of our regional event schedule in 2009-2010.
The Long Blue Line is about to get a little longer.
On Sunday, May 10, Marietta College is expected to confer more than 300 undergraduate degrees and a few dozen graduate degrees during the 172nd Commencement ceremony. About 225 of the undergraduates are expected since many of the other eligible graduates may have participated in last spring’s Commencement or the winter graduation in December. Most if not all of the graduate degree candidates should be in attendance.
The ceremony will take place at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center (DBRC), with doors opening to the public at 11 a.m. Graduates can start filtering in at 11:30 a.m., but must be checked in and in line by 12:30 p.m. in the lower hallway of DBRC by the racquetball courts. The College expects more than 1,800 people to fill the seats of the air-conditioned facility.
Heather K. Boomer '09 (Monument, Colo.) and Jakob K. Loukas '09 (Windham, Maine) will present their Jewett speeches and learn during the ceremony who will be named the Jewett Prize Orator. One of the oldest student awards, the Jewett Prize was created by a donation made to Marietta College in Milo Parker Jewett's will. He was a teacher at the Marietta Collegiate Institute from 1833 to 1835 and the professor of rhetoric from 1835 to 1848. He was also the first president of Vassar College.
Dave Herbert ’98, who won a $1 million prize from Doritos after producing the highest rated commercial during the Super Bowl, returned to Marietta College to speak with classes and reconnect with old friends on Friday, April 24
Herbert spoke to more than a couple hundred students before the day was complete, and each time he told them to follow their dreams and to remember that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
Herbert, along with his older brother, Joe, remain the hottest duo in advertising after winning the third annual "Crash the Super Bowl" commercial contest. The nabbed the $1 million prize by taking the top spot in USA Today’s Ad Meter. The Herberts’ commercial, which included a crystal ball (actually a snow globe) that was thrown at a vending machine and a boss, was aired for the first time nationally during Super Bowl XLIII.
According to USA Today, the Herberts are the first non-advertising agency “to create the best-liked Super Bowl commercial,” according to their fan ad meter.

More than 30 years have passed since Dr. Robert Walker and Dr. Peter Hogan were the new professors on campus.
Walker, a chemistry professor who had taught for a year and a half at Hiram College, had taken a position at Marietta in 1972 because it shared his ideals on educating students and its proximity to his Western Pennsylvania hometown.
A few years later, Hogan, who had recently earned his doctorate in zoology and animal behavior from Michigan State University, joined the Marietta community in 1975 and began teaching in the biology department.
At the end of the 2009 spring semester—after teaching for more than 70 years combined—both Hogan and Walker will retire. The College is hosting a special reception for the professors at 4:30 p.m. April 22 in the Rickey Science Center Lounge.
It just seems Jerry James ’80 was born to be a petroleum engineer.
Before graduating magna cum laude from Marietta College’s Petroleum Engineering program in 1980, James gained a great amount of experience through summer internships. Originally an engineer for Conoco in Corpus Christi, Texas, he returned to Marietta to work with Templeton and Associates before eventually moving on to found James Engineering and assume the presidency of Artex Oil.
He remains immersed in the industry today, managing almost 500 operated wells in Ohio and 100 more non-operated rigs in West Virginia, Texas, New Mexico or Montana.
James, who recently was recognized with an Oilfield Patriot Award for his efforts to achieve a fair taxation policy within the state, is one of three Marietta College alumni being inducted into the Petroleum Engineering and Geology Hall of Fame on April 16. Also being inducted are Ron Rinard ’72 and Cindy Reece ’78. The inductee ceremony will begin with a 6 p.m. cocktail hour followed by a 7 p.m. dinner at Fenton Court, where the ceremony will take place.

February 2, 2009 -- Dave Herbert ’98 doesn’t need a crystal ball to see into his future.
Herbert, along with his older brother, Joe, are the hottest duo in advertising today after winning $1 million from Doritos in the Frito-Lay product's third annual "Crash the Super Bowl" commercial contest. The Herberts’ commercial, which included a crystal ball (actually a snow globe) that was thrown at a vending machine and a boss, was aired for the first time nationally during Super Bowl XLIII Sunday.
According to USA Today, the Herberts became the first non-advertising agency “to create the best-liked Super Bowl commercial,” according to their fan ad meter.
"Two nobodies from nowhere," just walked off with one of the ad world's top honors, Dave said in the USA Today article this morning. We "beat the king of commercials."
Kurt Stocker '60, following a long and diverse career in business and academia, is at the center of the emerging issues surrounding the failures and restructuring of government regulation.
Stocker will be an honored guest and the speaker for Marietta College’s 174th Founders Day at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Alma McDonough Auditorium. He’ll be speaking on “Trust in an Uncertaind World.”
The College traditionally announces several faculty awards and appointments at the Founders Day Convocation, which begins at 7:30 p.m.
“I’m honored to be asked to return for Founders Day, but I am sure the invitation had more to do with the last 50 years than it did for my rather checkered career on campus,” Stocker quipped.
Marietta College’s Office of Alumni and College Relations, along with Hopkins Printing, has been awarded a Gold Award from the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen (IAPHC) for superb craftsmanship in the production of the Spring 2008 Marietta, The Magazine of Marietta College.
The honor is part of the 34th International Gallery, which included entries from around the world and was evaluated by international jurors in Minneapolis, Minn., in October 2008.
Hub Burton (Vice President for Alumni and College Relations), Tom Perry (Director of College Relations), Gi Smith (Writer/Editor) and Ryan Zundell (Art Director) produced the magazine, which is printed by Hopkins Printing of Columbus, Ohio.

Alumni are being asked to complete a survey that will help a group of current Marietta College students develop a plan to address the global energy crisis. The survey is one facet of the 2008-09 Executive-in-Residence Program.
"The purpose of this project is to investigate the alternative energy sources, examine the factors that influence our energy choices and understand the views of both consumers and industry experts," said Rob Vazquez ’09, a petroleum engineering major and EIR Survey Team leader. "The goal is to identify the actions that must be taken to realize the best possible future for the planet. Alumni participation is very important to our EIR project. With educated opinions, alumni provide a key target audience for the survey and their views serve to enhance our understanding of people's perceptions regarding current and future world energy needs and resources."
Alumni can complete the 26-question survey by clicking here.
