2 Weeks in New Hampshire The sun sinks behind the horizon, giving the New Hampshire winter night a chance to show itself in full force. With the wind chill factor barreling down to –14º, being outside for any stretch of time is painful. Political science major Britanny Saunier '09 walks up a steep side street in an outlying Manchester neighborhood with a small group of campaign workers. Her path bordered by snowdrifts, she begins her seventh hour of outdoor canvassing in areas where registered Democratic and Independent voters live, hoping to spread the message of Presidential candidate John Edwards. Her coat stuffed with pocket warmers, Saunier's voice can barely overcome the intensity of her body's uncontrollable shivering. Every word she speaks heats the air around her face, creating whispy puffs of vapor around her head. "I love what I'm doing right now," she says as she climbs into a car to get warm and organizes her candidate's promotional literature. "Every contact counts in an election and every person I meet matters. I believe people can make a difference and by doing this, I am making a difference. You can't get this in a classroom." |

| An Unnatural End
Marietta College's campus lies in the path of a destructive league of insects that could potentially wipe out the ash tree species in North America. The emerald ash borer was found in southeast Michigan in 2002. Within a year, they were found sporadically in Ohio, giving evidence the insects' widening chomping grounds had been established long before being discovered. They could reach Marietta's campus in a decade—less if people continue to transport firewood and lumber into this region from infested areas of the country.

Braig-ging Rights One day, in 1976 or 1977, Robin Braig '79 was in a small, rickety press box keeping statistics at a high school football game. To save money he had bummed a ride with his fraternity brother Joe Quinn '78, who was covering the same game for a local radio station. |

| Running Numbers
Harrison Potter '08 can't recall exactly when mathematics clicked for him. "I remember being enrolled in an advanced course in junior high with a lot of other really smart students, and we took a standardized test and I scored the lowest of everyone. I think I was even below the average score. Everyone was making fun of me in the class." Instead of slinking away, Potter began his devotion to chasing down solutions to mathematic problems and now, the McCoy and Rickey Scholarship winner is concluding one of the finest four-year academic runs in Marietta College history by making the Dean's High Honors list every semester while earning bachelor's degrees in mathematics and physics. He has also earned a reputation as one of the hardest working runners on the cross country and track and field teams. "Marietta's Potter ranks among best undergraduate math students" > > |
