Campaigning for Clinton

It seemed a long road to travel for Marietta College J-Term students Victoria "Tori" Caracciolo '08 and Abbey Sullivan '09.

Their candidate, Hillary Clinton, was shaping up to take third place in the Iowa Caucus and there was less than a week before the New Hampshire Primary. The campaign base stressed more than ever that every minute counted for the upcoming primary. With the inundation of the many presidential campaigns, the patience of the voters was wearing thin.

Caracciolo and Sullivan drove their compact car to a rural area about 20 minutes outside of Concord. Pulling into a cul-de-sac where two registered Democrats lived, the duo parked and each made their way down two lengthy driveways to greet the homeowners with their candidate's message. As Caracciolo reached the halfway point of the snow-slicked driveway, a man stepped out of his side door and yelled for her to get off his property and to not leave anything at his mailbox. Smiling, Caracciolo gave a polite wave, turned and headed back to the car. She jotted down the voter's reaction onto a polling sheet and then watched as Sullivan made her way back from her canvass.

"That doesn't happen very often," Caracciolo said. "They're usually very nice."

Sullivan, having heard the man's outburst, quickly returned from her voter's house to check on her partner. Sullivan said nearly all of the homes they approached had residents who understood why canvassing, phone banking and reaching out to voters was so important and most were appreciative of the campaigns' efforts.

"We like being out and meeting the voters and learning about them," Sullivan said.

With that, the two drove off and headed to their next neighborhood. By late afternoon, they returned to the Concord office and began an evening of phone banking.
