New Hampshire Photos: Obama Interns Reach Out to Voters

Obama Interns

Barack Obama's downtown campaign office in Portsmouth was still decked out for the holidays and the streets were lined with snowdrifts. Two days of heavy snowfall had cleared the skies of precipitation and left the outdoor ceiling a picturesque shade of Persian blue.

Inside, Melissa Varga '10 and Yolien Peeters '11 spent the morning calling voters to invite them to upcoming weekend rallies in and around the city. They also spent their phone time asking voters what they knew about Obama and if they would vote for him. "We track their responses by assigning a code level of support," Peeters said.

Olivia Jackson '11 sat nearby with another volunteer and organized campaign literature. "We're getting this ready for the next primary," Jackson said. She and the other interns had learned a great deal about the elections side of politics during their two-week internship with presidential campaigns.

Down the hall, Cody Thomas '10 made calls to registered Democrat and Independent voters. By lunchtime, he was called into an impromptu meeting with other campaign workers and quickly left to take his work outdoors meeting face-to-face with voters during neighborhood canvassing.
