For the first time in the 30-year history of the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association (OPCICA), Marietta College will host the Honor Band Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan. 29.

The concert begins at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Peoples Bank Theatre in downtown Marietta. The concert is free and open to the public.

“This is a great weekend for the college musicians. It’s an opportunity to meet students from other campuses that share a love of music,” said Marshall C. Kimball, Director of Bands at Marietta College. “It’s amazing what talented students can do in a short period of time to put on a thrilling concert after one and a half days of rehearsals.”

Kimball, who also serves as President-elect of OPCICA, said the bands will be conducted by five directors from member schools.

“Learning the conducting and educational style of each director in a short time is a true challenge,” he said. “One that the students readily accept.”

During the weekend band students from member colleges come together on Saturday, Jan. 28 and rehearse all day. The Honor Concert Band will rehearse in the Peoples Bank Theatre. The Honor Jazz Ensemble will be rehearsing in the Band Rehearsal Hall. The ensembles will rehearse all day Saturday and break at 5 p.m. The return at 9 a.m. Sunday and rehearse for an additional three hours in preparation of the concert.

OPCICA was founded in 1987 with a purpose of supporting the work of band directors and students in private colleges around the State of Ohio. With a full membership of 23 private colleges, OPCICA holds an honor band weekend each January.
