David M. Rickey ’78 chosen to speak at 168th Marietta commencement
Marietta College alumnus and benefactor David M. Rickey, has been chosen to speak at the 168th Commencement on Sunday, May 8. The celebration begins at 1 p.m. in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.
More than 320 graduates — including the first class of Rickey Scholars — will join Rickey during the Mother’s Day ceremony. Also, the first graduates from the Master of Corporate Media program will receive their degrees.
Rickey has made regular appearances on campus since August 2000 when the J&D Foundation and its founders, Rickey and Jan Nielsen, announced a gift of up to $10 million to benefit physics and mathematics at Marietta College. The gift not only seeded construction of the Rickey Science Center but also funded two new professorships in physics, generous scholarships for students majoring in physics, and equipment endowment, and a summer institute for high school physics teachers.
“Dave Rickey has had an outstanding career as an executive in the high tech field,” said Marietta College’s President Dr. Jean Scott. “A dynamic, innovative engineer and leader, he brings intelligence, imagination, and high energy to all of his endeavors. Dave Rickey has contributed both financial resources and his personal time to the building of our physics program, and I look forward to having him join us to celebrate the graduation of all of our seniors, including the first class of Rickey Scholars.”
Rickey, a 1978 graduate of Marietta College, recently retired as a chairman, president and CEO of Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, a San Diego-based manufacturer of specialized high-performance communications chips. He is remaining at the company until August to smooth the transition.
