John Cotton Society conducts first Recognition Ceremony
With more than 70 combined years of service to Marietta College's Board of Trustees, five individuals were honored during the inaugural Dr. John Cotton Society Trustee Society Recognition Ceremony at the President's House on May 15.
Making up the first class were Jerry A. Brock, William H. Donnelly '70, Jeffrey A. Starner '75, Robert D. Johnson and Norman J. Murray '39. All five received a commemorative medal to mark the occasion. John G. McCoy '35 was also part of the first group, but he received his recognition last week in Columbus.
The medals were conferred by President Jean A. Scott, Provost Rita Smith Kipp and Board of Trustees Chair Patricia Loreno Willis '70.
The society's namesake, Dr. John Cotton, was the Board's first president. The Cotton Society was initiated to recognize the special contributions of the College's former trustees and acknowledge the need to maintain the close personal connections to Marietta that prompted them to step forward and lend their leadership.
Brock, an Emeritus Trustee, served on the board from 1982 to 2002. He has been a partner and attorney with TheisenBrock in Marietta for more than 40 years. He graduated from Ohio University in 1960, earned his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1963 and a LL.M from the University of Illinois in 1964. He is married to Jennylou Brock.
Donnelly, a Life Associate Trustee, served on the Board from 1986 to 2000. He is the president of Hayes Insurance Agency in Marietta. He is married to Bonnie Allphin Donnelly '92.
Starner, a Life Associate Trustee, served on the Board from 1994 to 1999. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2005. He is the Vice President of Merchants 5 Star in Marietta. He is married to Liane Gray-Starner, an associate professor at Marietta College.
Johnson, an Emeritus Trustee, served on the Board from 1978 to 1992. He is the retired president and CEO of First Colony Corporation. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1950. He is married to Bonnie Johnson.
Murray, an Emeritus Trustee, served on the Board from 1963 to 1980. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999. He is the retired president of The Airolite Co. of Marietta and is married to Betsy Murray. His late wife, Josephine, died in 1998.
McCoy, a Life Associate Trustee, served on the Board from 1961-74. He served as President and CEO, Vice Chairman and CEO, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Banc One until retiring in 1984. His late wife, Jeanne B. McCoy, died in 2006.
