Planetarium Shows

This fall, Marietta College’s Anderson Hancock Planetarium will be hosting a handful of shows for the Mid-Ohio Valley residents to attend and enjoy.

“We are pleased with the variety of our shows and we are looking forward to seeing a combination of familiar faces and new visitors at the fall shows,” said Dr. Ann Bragg, Director of the Planetarium.

Kicking things off in September are the Equinox shows, held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, and 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20. The show will feature a live star talk detailing the significance of the equinox and explaining how it marks the beginning of the autumn season. Because the sun plays such a large role in any equinox event, a 22-minute show titled “Secrets of the Sun” will accompany the talk. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

October’s event is titled “The Cowboy Astronomer” and will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14.

According to the website of “The Cowboy Astronomer” creator, Loch Ness Productions, “The Cowboy Astronomer is a skillfully woven tapestry of star tales and Native American legends, combined with constellation identification, star-hopping, and astronomy tidbits — all told from the unique viewpoint of a cowboy astronomer who has traveled the world plying his trade and learning the sky along the way.”

A star talk will accompany the viewing of the film. Reservations can be made beginning Oct. 1.

Finally, one show will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15, and one on Sunday, Nov. 18, but the content has yet to be determined. Each will feature a star talk and a full-dome presentation, and reservations will be taken starting Thursday, Nov. 1.

To reserve your free spot, call (740) 376-4827 or send an email to planetarium@marietta.edu. They will also be accepting donations at the conclusion of each program and those without reservations will be admitted on a space-available basis.

The Anderson Hancock Planetarium is located on the Marietta College campus on the corner of Fourth and Butler streets. Handicap parking is available.
