Marietta's Moriarty and Taylor recipients of 2005 Clyde A. Lamb Awards
May 16, 2005
MARIETTA, Ohio The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) recently released the 2005 Clyde A. Lamb Award winners, and Marietta College seniors Katie Moriarty (North Canton/Hoover) and Chris Taylor (Mineral Wells, WV/Parkersburg South) were among the 10 male student-athletes and 10 female student-athletes from each of the Ohio Athletic Conference
institutions chosen for the prestigious honor.
All 20 Clyde A. Lamb Award winners were honored at the 21st annual OAC Awards Banquet on Monday, May 16, at the
Clarion Dublin Hotel in Columbus. Prior to last year, a committee of athletics directors and faculty representatives selected
a male and female from the 20 student-athletes to be awarded Clyde A. Lamb Scholarships after the banquet.
Moriarty was a four-year letterwinner in both softball and basketball while at Marietta.
On the hardwood, Moriarty proved to be a clutch shooter for the Lady Pioneers. She finished her career with 695 points, 344 rebounds and 131 steals. The forward was named Academic All-OAC in both 2004 and 2005.
When it came to her play on the diamond, Moriarty also made a huge impact for Marietta softball. In 2005, the catcher/designated player's leadership helped the Lady Pioneers reach the OAC Tournament for the first time since 1999. Moriarty finished her career tied for the all-time lead in games played (143). She is also the all-time leader in at-bats (422), while second in hits (117), and third in home runs (3), RBI (64) and putouts (549). Moriarty, who is a two-time Academic All-OAC selection in softball, was named All-OAC and All-Region for her play in 2005.
Moriarty, who carried a 3.804 GPA, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting this spring. While at Marietta, Moriarty was active in the Campus Life/Athletics Committee, Ohio Society of CPAs, EVE, Inc., Ely Chapman Educational Foundation, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (Vice President), Alpha Lambda Delta and Tau Pi Phi. She has been accepted into Masters of Accounting (MAcc) at the Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University.
Taylor was a three-year letterwinner in both indoor and outdoor track. He also earned one varsity letter in soccer.
Taylor, three-time All-OAC selection in the indoor high jump, capped off his career with an eighth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA DIII Championships in March, where he was named an All-American. The indoor school record holder (6-09.50) had provisionally qualified for the event as a junior. Taylor also earned All-OAC honors in outdoor track as a sophomore in 2003 and placed fifth at the OAC Championships in 2005.
Taylor, who earlier this month graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, was recently named Academic All-OAC for the second straight season.
In addition to his involvement in track and field, Taylor was active in Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (Community Outreach Chairman), Habitat for Humanity (Building Supervisor), Community Action and the Sunshine Learning Station tutor program.
The Clyde A. Lamb Awards are named in honor of the man who organized the Department of Health and Physical Education
at Ohio Northern in 1929. He served as coach, department chairman and athletics director at ONU from 1929-64.
Criteria for the award include at least two year's participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point
average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his/her
institution.
