MC baseball goes 1-0-1 Friday at Port Charlotte Invitational

Mar. 11, 2005
PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida - The Marietta College baseball team continued its spring trip Friday (Mar. 11) with one game against to Falcons' squads. The Etta Express battled Messiah (PA) to an eight-inning 4-4 tie and then routed Concordia (WI) 10-1. Marietta improved its record to 4-2-1 with two games remaining on its Port Charlotte schedule.

The Pioneers struggle offensively in the first game, finishing with just four hits, while senior Mike Mooney (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) and sophomore Derek Cummings (Tuscarawas/Indian Valley) combined to allow 12 hits on the day. Mooney, who started the game, gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings; two of his runs scored on wild pitches. Cummings surrendered one run on four hits in three innings.

The game was called after eight innings because the high school team whose field the contest was being played on had a game of its own.

Marietta quickly made its way to the Port Charlotte Sports Complex to take on its next opponent, Concordia (WI). The Etta Express jumped on the Falcons for seven runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 10-1 victory.

Senior Chris Sidick (Cecil, PA/Canon McMillan) and junior Lee Guerrera (Wolcott, CT) each finished with three hits. Sidick scored three runs and drove in three, while Guerrera scored once and had four RBI.

Freshman Jeff Feigel (Severn, MD/Arundel) was nearly flawless in his first start in the pinstripes. Feigel allowed one unearned run on three hits, striking out five, in seven innings to pick up his first win of the year.

Marietta will close out its spring break schedule with at least one game Saturday (Mar. 12). The Etta Express are slated to play Fitchburg (MA) at 12 p.m. and are searching for another ball game before they head north.
