MARIETTA, Ohio — Pioneer baseball fans got another opportunity to relive some of the memories of the Etta Express' magical ride this past spring, as the 2006 squad returned to campus for its National Championship ring ceremony Saturday (Oct. 28) night at Don Drumm Stadium.
Marietta College President Jean Scott and Head Coach Brian Brewer presented each player and staff member with a gift from the College and MC Baseball Fraternity to commemorate their NCAA Division III National Championship. Alums, families and friends returned to campus to help take part in the festivities.
Brewer led the Pioneers to a 43-11 record, including a 4-0 performance in the D-III World Series in late May. Marietta clinched its fourth NCAA Division III National Championship with a 7-2 victory over Wheaton (Mass.) in the Championship Game at Fox Cities Stadium in Grande Chute, Wis.
The ring features the MC baseball logo on the face with four diamonds—one for each of the program's National Championships. In addition, one side of the band showcases Don Schaly Stadium and the year 2006, while the other includes the recipient's name with the team's final record 43-11.
The Etta Express also won the title in 1981, 1983 and 1986. It was the first time the Etta Express captured the nation's top prize away from the friendly confines of Marietta, Ohio.
Marietta will begin its quest for a fifth title in early March when the Pioneers open the 2007 season Georgia. |
