topples host Wittenberg 19-9
Marietta collects 16 hits and draws 16 walks
in victory

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The National Champion Marietta College
baseball team ended a three-game slide with a 19-9 victory at non
conference foe Wittenberg Tuesday (May 1) night.
The No. 30 Pioneers, who improved to 25-11, finished the night
with 16 hits and 16 walks in the three hour and 20 minute affair.
The Tigers, who ended with 15 hits, fell to 18-19.
Junior Tony Piconke (Clinton Twp., Mich./Clintondale)
finished 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and was robbed of another.
Junior Tom Doty (Mentor) went 4-for-5 with a home
run, and sophomore Don Pugliese (Coraopolis, Pa./West
Allegheny) added two hits, including a home run, in five at-bats.
All three players had four RBI in the win.
Sophomore Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) earned
the win with five 1/3 solid innings of relief. He scattered two
runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out three to improve to
6-3.
Marietta is back in action Wednesday (May 2), when it travels to
Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) for a key Mideast Regional showdown.
First pitch with the Presidents is slated for 7 p.m. The action
