Marietta will take on Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior Dom Winters (Washington, Pa.) went 4-for-4 with a home run and sophomore Tyler Penwell (Washington Court House) pitched five solid innings in relief to lead the Pioneers to a 9-7 victory over visiting Bethany (W.Va.) College. The win improved Marietta’s record to 19-17, while Bethany fell to 9-26-1 on the spring.
The Etta Express out hit the Bison 13-9 and was able to overcome three errors in the win. Marietta has now won three in a row and five of its last six.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Marietta plated five runs. The Pioneers had six hits in the inning, including five straight with two outs. Junior Brennan Cribbins (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), junior Cameron Cimino (Boardman) and Winters all had doubles to left and later scored in the frame. Junior Josh Spicer (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) drove in the first run with a ground out. Cimino then picked up two RBI with his double, Winters followed with another on his two-base hit, while sophomore Matt DeSico (Euclid) drove in the fifth run with a single up the middle.
Bethany responded with five runs on four hits off sophomore starter Mark Williams (Fayetteville) to tie the game after the top of the fourth.
Winters drilled his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, in the fifth to put Marietta back on top 7-5. Cimino walked and scored on the home run.
The Bison added a run of its own in the sixth to pull within a run, 7-6. Marietta added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, one on a wild pitch and another on a single by Penwell.
Bethany plated a run and had the tying run on second base with two outs in the ninth but Winters caught a looping line drive to end the game.
Penwell (1-1) scattered two runs on four hits, walked three and fanned four in five innings. Williams allowed five runs on five hits, walked two and struck out three in four frames. Milton Joyner (3-5) took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
DeSico added to Winters’ night at the plate, which also included three runs scored and three RBI, by going 3-for-4 behind him in the lineup.
The Etta Express is back in action on Wednesday (April 30) night when they play host to Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College for a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader. The JV game will begin at 4 p.m. and the varsity contest is slated for 7 p.m. The varsity game can be heard live locally in Marietta on WMOA-AM 1490
