Marietta's Cimino earns All-America honors from D3Baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings
Senior becomes 107th Pioneers All-American since 1972

MARIETA, Ohio — Marietta College senior Cameron Cimino (Boardman) expected so much more from his senior baseball season.

While the Pioneers came up short on many of the team goals, Cimino can take a measure of pride knowing he achieved a personal goal.

Cimino, the 2009 Jack Rafeld Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Player of the Year, was named first team All-America by the America Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Rawlings and third team All-America by D3Baseball.com. Marietta has now produced 107 All-Americans since 1972.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) announced the 2009 Academic All-OAC Baseball winners Wednesday (May 20) morning, and Marietta College junior Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa./Hampton) and sophomore Britt Meador (Columbus/Kilbourne) have been named Academic All-OAC honorable mention.

26 players from the Conference have been named Academic All-OAC and Academic All-OAC honorable mention in 2007. The academic award winners are selected by the OAC faculty athletics representatives. To be eligible for Academic All-OAC, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least her second year of participation in the sport.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) released its 2009 All-Mideast Region teams on Tuesday (May 19) afternoon and three Marietta College players received the regional honor. Senior third baseman Cameron Cimino (Boardman) and junior designated hitter Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa./Hampton) earned All-Mideast Region first team honors, while senior pitcher Chris Stewart (Dublin/Coffman) was named to the All-Mideast Region third team.

Marietta, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Brian Brewer, finished the spring 32-17, taking home runner-up in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season, OAC Tournament and Mideast Regional Tournament.

Marietta baseball ends season 32-17

ADRIAN, Mich. — The 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament came down to a winner take all match-up between regional powers and rivals Marietta College and the College of Wooster Monday (May 18) afternoon at Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian (Mich.) College. The squads met for the third time in as many days with a trip to Grande Chute, Wis., and the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship on the line. With the regional series locked at 1-1, the Fighting Scots earned the bid with a 4-3 victory to end the Pioneers’ season.

Marietta finished the spring 32-17, taking home runner-up in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season, OAC Tournament and Mideast Regional Tournament. Wooster improved to 39-9 and will open its fifth trip to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship on Friday against the winner of the Central Region.

ADRIAN, Mich. — The third-seeded Marietta College baseball team scored six unanswered runs in a 6-2 victory over second-seeded the College of Wooster in game nine of the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament on Sunday (May 17) afternoon on the campus of Adrian (Mich.) College.

With the victory, the Etta Express (32-16) kept its season alive and advanced to the championship game of the six-team tournament. Marietta, who will look to win its record 21st Mideast Regional crown, will take on Wooster (37-9) for the third straight day as the Fighting Scots eliminated fourth-seeded Adrian (Mich.) 8-2 later in the day. The championship match-up will take place on Monday (May 18) at 12 p.m.

ADRIAN, Mich. — Facing elimination for the first time in the 2009 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, Marietta College senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference performers T.J. Knowlton (Greenwich/Mapleton) and Cameron Cimino (Boardman) put the team on their shoulders and led the Etta Express to a 5-2 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday (May 16) evening at Adrian (Mich.) College.

The win improved the Pioneers’ record to 31-16, while the Fightin’ Engineers finished the year 32-14. Third-seeded Marietta will get a rematch with the second-seeded College of Wooster on Sunday (May 17) at 12 p.m. The Fighting Scots are the lone unbeaten team after knocking the Pioneers from the unbeaten ranks with a 13-3 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Marietta to face Rose-Hulman in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m.

ADRIAN, Mich. — Third-seeded Marietta College and second-seeded the College of Wooster renewed their rivalry in game six of the 2009 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Tournament on Saturday (May 16) afternoon. The winner’s bracket battle was postponed on Friday (May 15) night and then delayed over an hour on Saturday because of rain. Once it started, it was all Fighting Scots as they defeated the Pioneers 13-3 to become the lone unbeaten team in the six-team tournament. Saturday’s win marked just the sixth time in 17 meetings that Wooster defeated Marietta in regional play.

Marietta (30-16) must turn around and play sixth-seeded Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. A Pioneer victory would setup a rematch with the Fighthing Scots (37-8) on Sunday (May 17) afternoon.

ADRIAN, Mich. — The four-time National Champion Marietta College baseball team opened 2009 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional play with an impressive 14-3 victory over host Adrian (Mich.) College on Thursday (May 14) evening at Nicloay Field.

The third-seeded Pioneers improved to 30-15 and advance to take on rival the second-seeded College of Wooster in a winner’s bracket game on Friday (May 15) evening at 5 p.m. Thursday marked the 32nd time in the last 33 years that Marietta has won at least 30 games in a season. The fourth-seeded Bulldogs fell to 31-10 and will battle sixth-seeded Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Friday at 2 p.m.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) released its 2009 All-OAC Baseball Teams and Special Award Winners Monday (May 11) and five Marietta College student-athletes were among the 45 to receive recognition.

Senior third baseman Cameron Cimino (Boardman) and junior designated hitter Chris Beatty (Seven Fields Pa./Hampton) both earned first team honors. Cimino was also named Jack Rafeld OAC Player of the Year. In addition, sophomore first baseman Casey Levens (Dayton/Centerville), freshman pitcher Brian Gasser (New Philadelphia/Indian Valley), and senior pitcher T.J. Knowlton (Greenwich/Mapleton) all received honorable mention.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) recently announced the 2009 Clyde A. Lamb Award winners, and Marietta College senior track & field throwing specialist Tiffany Kovacevich (Strongsville) and senior baseball standout Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) were among the 10 female and 10 male student-athletes, one from each of the OAC institutions, chosen for the prestigious honor.

All 20 Clyde A. Lamb Award winners were honored at the 25th annual OAC Awards Banquet on Monday (May 11) evening at the Holiday Inn in Worthington. Until 2004, a committee of athletics directors and faculty representatives selected a male and female from the 20 student-athletes to be awarded Clyde A. Lamb Scholarships after the banquet. Criteria for the award includes at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.

INDIANAPOLIS Ind. — The Marietta College baseball team will make its 34th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2009. The announcement came early Monday (May 11) morning from the NCAA office, which released the 54 schools that will compete for the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. The four-time national champion (1981, 1983, 1986 and 2006) Etta Express (29-15) received one of 13 at-large bids to this year's postseason tournament after finishing runner-up in both the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season and tournament. Marietta, the third seed, will open Mideast Regional play against fourth-seeded and host Adrian (Mich.) College on Wednesday (May 13) at 7 p.m. The Pioneers captured the Mideast Regional title in each of the last four years that they have participated; their most recent appearance came in 2007.

TIFFIN, Ohio — For the second straight year, the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Baseball Tournament Championship came down to a battle between rival Marietta College and host Heidelberg University. On Sunday (May 10) afternoon, the Student Princes pulled out the 5-1 win to secure its second straight title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Tournament.

Heidelberg will enter postseason play with an overall record of 36-7. The Etta Express fell to 29-15 and must await word of a potential at-large bid to the postseason. 13 Pool C bids will be up for grabs for teams from across the country this season. The announcement will be made early Monday (May 11) morning. The last four times that Marietta has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, it has won the Mideast Regional.

TIFFIN, Ohio — Junior Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa./Hampton) slugged two home runs, including a two-run walk off in the bottom of the ninth inning to propel third-seeded Marietta College to a 10-9 victory over second-seeded Otterbein College in game five of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Baseball Tournament.

Head Coach Brian Brewer’s squad improved to 29-14 and will take on top-seeded and host Heidelberg University in the OAC Championship Game on Sunday (May 10) morning. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. The Etta Express will need to defeat the Student Princes twice to secure its 32nd OAC Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament, which is being hosted by Adrian (Mich.) College May13-17. The two schools met in the OAC title came a year ago with Heidelberg topping Marietta twice to claim the crown. Otterbein finished its year 23-17.

TIFFIN, Ohio — Marietta College waited 20 hours before going head-to-head with rival Otterbein College in the second game of the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Baseball Tournament Friday (May 8) afternoon on the campus of Heidelberg University. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday (May 7) but had to be pushed to Friday because of rain. Friday’s start was then delayed three hours due to wet field conditions. Once play finally got started, both teams put on an offensive display. Unfortunately, the Etta Express came out on the wrong side of an 18-10 decision.

The second-seeded Cardinals (22-15) advanced to take on top-seeded Heidelberg Thursday afternoon in the winner’s bracket game. The third-seeded Pioneers (27-14) will battle fourth-seeded John Carroll University in an elimination game Saturday (May 9) morning at 9:30 a.m.

GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Marietta College baseball team put the finishing touches on its regular season with a doubleheader split at regional foe Thiel (Pa.) College Tuesday (May 5) afternoon. The Tomcats rallied for a 9-8 win in the opener, and the Pioneers turned the tables with a 5-4, eight-inning victory in the nightcap. Both teams head into their respective conference tournaments with a 27-13 record.

The Etta Express will be the third seed in the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament, which begins Thursday (May 7) afternoon at top-seeded Heidelberg University. Freshmen pitchers perform well in extended varsity action

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Head Coach Brian Brewer received stellar pitching performances from two Pioneer freshmen starters, and the Marietta College offense exploded for 24 runs on 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Monday (May 4) afternoon on the campus of Thiel College. The Etta Express won 7-1 and 17-2 to improve to 26-12. The Bobcats fell to 19-19.

Freshman Austin Blaski (Pandora/Gilboa) made the most of his second career start in the pinstripes as he held the Bobcats to just one run on five hits over six innings en route to earning his first victory of the season in game one. Blaski (1-0) walked one and fanned five in the win. Freshman Bill Fullen (Williamsport/Westfall), meanwhile, scattered just two runs on two hits over six innings to earn the win in his first career start in game two. Fullen (1-0) walked two and struck out two in the victory.

Marietta baseball announces schedule changes for final week of regular season

MARIETTA, Ohio — Head Coach Brian Brewer's Marietta College baseball team will take to the road for its final preparations before the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament, which will be hosted by Heidelberg University beginning on May 7. The Pioneers were originally slated to play home games on Monday (May 4) and Tuesday (May 5) but wet field conditions and the forecast of more rain has forced the team to make other arrangements.

The Etta Express (24-12) will now take on the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (Pa.) in a doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m. and then play Thiel College in a single, nine-inning game on Tuesday at 12 p.m. All of the games will take place on Thiel's campus in Greenville, Pa. ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball team closed out its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) slate with a doubleheader split at host Ohio Northern University Saturday (May 2). The Polar Bears rallied for a 6-5 win in the opener, while the Pioneers used a four-run 11th frame to secure the twinbill split with an 8-4 victory in game two.

Marietta moved its record to 24-12 overall and finished 12-6 in the OAC. The Etta Express have locked up either the second or third seed in next week’s OAC Tournament, which will take place beginning Thursday (May 7) at top-seeded Heidelberg University after the Student Princes swept a doubleheader at John Carroll University on Saturday. Otterbein College joined Marietta, Heidelberg and John Carroll to complete the OAC Tournament field after splitting a twinbill at Mount Union College. Ohio Northern, who moved to 15-21 overall and 12-6 in the OAC, will host Otterbein on Sunday (May 3). The results of those games will determine the final three OAC Tournament seeds.

Marietta wraps up Alumni Weekend with 8-5 victory over Denison

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College baseball wrapped up its busy Alumni Weekend with an 8-5 victory over visiting Denison University in non-conference, regional action Sunday (April 26) night at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers, who won five of six games over a six-day stretch, improved their record to 23-11. The Big Red fell to 18-19.

Sophomore starter Mark Williams (Fayetteville/Perry) earned the win to move to 3-2. The right-hander scattered five runs on 14 hits, walked one and struck out three in six innings of work. Freshman Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) threw two scoreless frames, striking out four, and senior Chris Stewart (Dublin/Coffman) worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the spring.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Baldwin-Wallace College on Alumni Day Saturday (April 25) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers rallied for an 8-6 win in the first game and then out slugged the Yellow Jackets 23-13 in the second game.

Marietta, who remain in second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), improved to 22-11 overall and 11-5 in the league. The Pioneers trail first place Heidelberg University by two games with two to play after the Student Princes swept a twinbill at Wilmington College. Baldwin-Wallace fell to 17-17 overall and 7-9 in the OAC.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Muskingum College scored four unanswered runs after the fifth inning to steal a 6-5 non-conference victory from host Marietta College Friday (April 24) night at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers fell to 20-11, while the Fighting Muskies improved to 19-14.

Marietta out hit Muskingum 11-10 but could not overcome three errors. Five of the Pioneers’ hits went for extra bases. Senior Cameron Cimino (Boardman) finished 4-for-5 and sophomore Casey Levens (Dayton/Centerville) had a pair of hits in the loss. Forest Wright led the Muskies with four hits from the nine-hole.

MARIETTA, Ohio — A strong effort from its pitching staff led the Marietta College baseball team to a 9-2 non-conference win over NAIA visiting foe Shawnee State University Thursday (April 23) night at Don Schaly Stadium. The Etta Express used five arms in the victory, which improved its record to 20-10 on the season. It marks the 39th straight year that the four-time national champions have won at least 20 games in a spring. The Bears fell to 21-26.

Marietta’s senior ace T.J. Knowlton (Greenwich/Mapleton) got the start and worked two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout.

GRANVILLE, Ohio — An unexpected, late-afternoon shower has forced Wednesday (April 23) night's Marietta College at Denison University baseball game to be canceled. The teams were scheduled to play a single, nine-inning game at 7 p.m. No makeup date has been set at this time.

Marietta (19-10) will return to action on Thursday (April 23) night when it plays host to Shawnee State University at 7 p.m. Thursday is a special night for local St. Mary's School students as they attend the game in honor of National Turn-off TV week. St. Mary's students will be admitted at no charge.

Etta Express defeats visiting Waynesburg 11-8
Marietta improves to 19-10 on the spring

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball teamed began its busy week on the right track with an 11-8 victory over visiting Waynesburg (Pa.) University on Tuesday (April 21) evening at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers (19-10), who will play six games in five days, built an early lead and then held off a late rally to snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 9-2 at home in 2009. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 15-15 on the season.

Marietta took the early lead with a four-run first inning against Waynesburg. Sophomore Jordan Thompson (Quaker City/Buckeye Trail), who finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, singled to left field and senior Cameron Cimino (Boardman) walked to start the frame. Junior Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa./Hampton), who finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, followed with a double down the third base line to drive in Thompson. Sophomore Casey Levens (Dayton/Centerville) then drilled a three-run shot over the left center field fence for his fourth home run of the season, which gave the Pioneers a 4-0 advantage.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The first pitch of Tuesday (April 21) evening's single, nine-inning baseball game between Marietta College and visiting Waynesburg (Pa.) has been moved up to 4 p.m. The junior varsity game has been canceled.

The Pioneers (18-10, 9-5 OAC) have busy week of baseball scheduled. On Wednesday, Marietta is slated to visit Denison for a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader. The varsity game will begin at 7 p.m. The Etta Express returns home on Thursday to play host to Shawnee State at 7 p.m. Marietta will then play a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader with visiting Muskingum on Friday. First pitch of the varsity game is again set for 7 p.m. On Saturday, the busy week will wrap up with an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader against visiting Baldwin-Wallace. First pitch of that Alumni Day doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.

#15 Marietta drops OAC doubleheader at rival Otterbein
Etta Express falls 12-1 and 7-3

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Host Otterbein College slugged its way to an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader sweep of the #15 Marietta College baseball team Saturday (April 18) afternoon. The Cardinals smashed five home runs in a 12-1 victory to open the day and then hit two more to help it win the nightcap 7-3. The losses dropped the Pioneers' record to 18-10 overall and 9-5 in the OAC. The Cardinals improved to 15-10, 7-5 in league play.

Senior Jason Baumler (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) suffered the loss in the opener after allowing nine runs (five earned) on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Baumler (2-2) walked three, hit three and fanned one in the game.

Pioneers win opener 5-4 but fall in nightcap 3-2

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College and Muskingum College renewed their rivalry on the baseball diamond Thursday (April 18) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium after being rained out the two previous days. The teams produced a pair of one-run games with the #15 Etta Express rallying to win the opener 5-4 and the Fighting Muskies rallying to win the nightcap 3-2.

With the split, Marietta moved to 18-8 overall and 9-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fell to second place, one game behind league leader Heidelberg University after the Student Princes swept a doubleheader at Ohio Northern on Thursday. Muskingum improved to 14-14, 5-7 in the OAC.

Cimino hits a key home run in both games

MARIETTA, Ohio — Nearly 1,500 fans witnessed senior third baseman Cameron Cimino (Boardman) slam two key home runs and the Marietta College baseball team sweep an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader against visiting Wilmington College on the 11th annual Baseball Community Day Saturday (April 11) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. The Etta Express, ranked #15 in the latest ABCA poll and #19 in the most recent NCBWA/D3baseball.com poll, remained locked atop the league standings with Heidelberg University following 8-7 and 5-3 victories over the Quakers.

Cimino, the reigning OAC Hitter of the Week, drilled a game-winning two-run home run to cap a four-run Marietta (17-7, 8-2 OAC) rally in the sixth inning of the opener. In the nightcap, he then added another two-run shot in the fourth frame, which provided the winning margin. Cimino has now hit six home runs in his last five games at Don Schaly Stadium.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) office announced its Athletes of the Week Monday (April 6) afternoon for the period of March 30-April 5, and Marietta College senior third baseman/designated hitter Cameron Cimino (Boardman) was named the OAC Baseball Hitter of the Week.

Cimino, a 2008 All-Region and All-OAC selection, batted .480 (12-for-25) with 10 runs scored and 13 RBI in seven games last week for the #14 Etta Express (14-6, 5-1 OAC). He hit four home runs on the week, including one in each game against Capital on Monday.

WOOSTER, Ohio — The Mideast Regions two powers went head-to-head in a thrilling 11-inning battle Wednesday (April 1) afternoon with #4 College of Wooster pulling out the 11-10 victory over visiting #14 Marietta College at Art Murray Field. The Pioneers (13-4) had opportunities to seal the win, but the Fighting Scots (20-3) rallied to extend the game in both the ninth and 10th innings before plating the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Cameron Cimino (Boardman) slammed a pair of home runs to help the #14 Marietta College baseball team extend its win streak to seven games with a 7-2 and 4-3 sweep of visiting Capital University Monday (March 30) evening at Don Schaly Stadium. With the wins, the Etta Express improved to 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Crusaders dropped to 9-11, 1-3 in league play.

Marietta’s offense struck in its first at-bat. Senior Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) shot a one-out double inside the first base bag and into the corner in right field. WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior Tyler Penwell (Washington Court House) drilled a go ahead grand slam in the top of the eighth to propel the #14 Marietta College baseball team to a 10-7 victory over host Washington & Jefferson College on Friday (March 27) night in a game originally slated for Thursday (March 26). The win, Marietta’s fifth in a row, improved the Pioneers’ record to 10-3. The Presidents fell to 6-4 on the year.

Sophomore John Snyder (Altoona, Pa.) led off the game with a single to right. Senior Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) followed with a double to left, advancing Snyder to third. MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Jason Baumler (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) threw six shutout innings in #14 Marietta College baseball’s 8-1 victory over visiting Denison University Wednesday (March 25) night at Don Schaly Stadium.

Baumler, who improved his record to 1-1, equaled his longest outing of the season. The right-hander scattered six hits and matched a career high with seven strikeouts in the win, which improved the Pioneers’ record to 9-3. The Big Red fell to 9-7 on the year.

The Pioneers (8-3, 2-0 OAC), who swept the Student Princes (11-5, 0-2 OAC) in their league opener for the second straight year, won the first game 7-2 and then held on for an 11-8 victory in the nightcap.

The sweep marked the second and third victories for the four-time national champion Etta Express against a top 10 team; Marietta defeated then #7 Texas-Tyler on March 9 during its spring trip to Abilene, Texas.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The #18 Marietta College baseball team opened its 2009 home schedule with a non-conference doubleheader split against visiting La Roche (Pa.) College on Wednesday (March 18) afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium. The Redhawks (3-6) scored eight of their 10 runs with two outs en route to a 10-8 victory over the Pioneers in the opener. Marietta (6-3) then turned the tables by scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth frame to secure a 10-9 victory in the nightcap.

La Roche took a 1-0 lead by scoring a run in the top of the first against Marietta sophomore starter Mark Williams (Fayetteville/Perry). Pioneer junior Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa./Hampton) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame with a single to right field. Senior Cameron Cimino (Boardman), who tripled over the center fielder’s head earlier in the inning, scored on the play.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The #13 Marietta College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip by splitting a doubleheader at Maryville (Tenn.) College on Sunday (March 15) afternoon. The Pioneers fell 6-5 in nine innings before winning 4-0 in the nightcap of the doubleheader that was added this weekend to replace two of the games lost due to rain while the Etta Express was in Texas. The split moved Marietta’s record to 5-2, while Maryville improved to 11-8.

The Pioneers trailed 2-0 after the first inning of the opener. Marietta evened the score at 2-2 in the fourth when they plated a pair of runs on a fielder’s choice off the bat of sophomore Casey Levens (Dayton/Centerville). Seniors Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) and Cameron Cimino (Boardman) both singled earlier in the frame and scored on the play, which was aided by a throwing error. The Scots regained the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the frame.

ABILENE, Texas — For the second time in three days, the #13 Marietta College baseball team's schedule in Texas has been affected by rain. The Pioneers had a pair of games canceled on Wednesday and learned Thursday (March 12) evening that their doubleheader at Texas-Wesleyan in Fort Worth on Friday has also been called off due to weather.

ABILENE, Texas — The #13 Marietta College baseball team opened day two of the Abilene Classic with a match-up against host Abilene Christian University, ranked #5 in NCAA Division II. The Pioneers went toe-to-toe with the Wildcats but fell 4-2 to drop to 3-1 on the young season. Abilene Christian improved to 19-5 on the spring.

Levens hits third home run of the season

ABILENE, Texas — Two of the nation’s top NCAA Division III baseball teams went head-to-head under the lights at Walt Driggers Field Monday (March 9) night on the campus of McMurry University during day one of the Abilene Classic. #17 Marietta College plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the comeback and knock off #7 Texas-Tyler. The Pioneers’ improved their record to 3-0, while the Patriots fell to 14-4.

Texas-Tyler scored a run against Marietta senior T.J. Knowlton (Mapleton/Greenwich) in its first at-bat of the game. Marietta answered in its half of the first frame when senior third baseman Cameron Cimino (Boardman) drilled a one-out, two-run home run to right center field. Etta Express defeats Rhodes 6-5 and Blackburn 11-6

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The #17 Marietta College baseball team rallied for a 6-5 victory in 10 innings over host Rhodes College and then topped Blackburn College, 11-6, on Saturday (March 7) in Memphis, Tenn. The four-time National Champion Pioneers improved to 2-0 on the season with the wins.

Senior Justin Merryman (New Philadelphia) delivered a game-tying, two-out single in the top of the ninth, and sophomore John Snyder (Altoona, Pa.) followed with a game-winning RBI single in the top of the tenth to propel the Etta Express to a win over Rhodes in its season opener.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Baseball Coach Brian Brewer announced an addition to the team's 2009 schedule on Thursday (March 5) morning. The four-time national champion Etta Express will take on Blackburn College from Carlinville, Ill., on Saturday (March 7) night in Memphis, Tenn. First pitch is slated for 8 p.m. Marietta will open the season earlier in the day with a match-up against host Rhodes College. MARIETTA, Ohio — Rain has forced Marietta College baseball's trip to the Tournament of Champions, hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan College, to be canceled. The Pioneers will now open the season against Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., on March 7. First pitch is slated for 11:30 a.m.

MARIETTA, Ohio — There is great optimism surrounding the Marietta College baseball team as it enters the 2009 season. Sixth-year Head Coach Brian Brewer’s squad is filled with talent and hungry to win the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and make its return to the NCAA Tournament after a 2008 campaign, which left the Pioneers one win shy of a third-straight trip to postseason play.

Marietta, which won national championships in 1981, 1983, 1986 and 2006, has plenty of firepower as it heads into the spring. The Etta Express expects to return 10 of 12 lettermen, seven everyday starters and almost its entire pitching staff. A group of hard-working underclassmen and freshmen will battle to fill the few holes left by graduation.

Marietta College begins pursuit of record fifth national title on Feb. 28

MARIETTA, Ohio — The release of the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Preseason Poll is the first sign that the 2009 Marietta College baseball season will soon be getting underway. With 10 returning lettermen and a talented group of newcomers, sixth-year Head Coach Brian Brewer’s Pioneers expect to assert themselves as a conference, regional and national contender once again in 2009. Collegiate Baseball echoed that sentiment by voting Marietta #15 in the 30-team poll, which was release on Dec. 23.

The Etta Express will begin practice in mid January and open the season in less than two months when it takes on #27 Piedmont College from Demorest, Ga., on Feb. 28. The match-up is part of a three-game trip to Rocky Mount, N.C., where Marietta will also play host North Carolina Wesleyan on Feb. 28 and then Montclair State (N.J.) University, who also received votes in the poll, on March 1.

DeMark named San Diego Padres Minor League Pitcher of the Year

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Mike DeMark, a 2006 graduate of Marietta College and current San Diego Padres farmhand, was named the professional baseball organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year by MadFriars.com on Monday (Nov. 10).

DeMark, who signed a minor league contract with the Padres in 2007, had a breakout year in 2008, splitting time between a pair of San Diego’s minor league affiliates. It is the first time that the site has chosen a reliever as it Pitcher of the Year.

Marietta College baseball to host Camp of Champs this winter

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College baseball staff will be hosting two indoor prospect camps this winter at Dyson Baudo Recreation Center, on the campus of Marietta College. The camps will take place on Sunday, Nov. 30 and Sunday, Dec. 14. The cost of the camp is $80. [Camp Site]

Campers will have the opportunity to work with and be evaluated by the staff. They will also get a chance to meet with representatives of the Admission and Financial Aid Offices. Space is limited and restricted to 2009, 2010 and 2011 high school graduates.

Pioneers prepare to make another run at OAC, Regional and National titles in 2009

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College Baseball program completed its 2008 fall season Friday (Oct. 24) with the conclusion of its annual Blue vs. White playoff series. It was a very active and productive fall for Marietta baseball players, particularly the newcomers, as nearly the entire roster played in over 25 games during the past two months.

The fall began with the Greater Marietta Fall Baseball League, a four team community league which played its 25th season. The GMFBL featured an 11-game regular season schedule and double-elimination playoff tournament. The regular season was extremely competitive with all four teams finishing within a game of each other in the standings. Zide’s Sport Shop took home the GMFBL title with an 11-1 victory over People’s Bank in the championship game. Zide’s was paced by the GMFBL’s leading hitter John Snyder (.548 BA, 8 triples, 18 runs scored), and the league’s top starting pitcher Brian Gasser (3-1, 1.17 ERA). Black’s Tree Service took home third place, while Michael Bradley & Co. finished in fourth.

DeSalvo ’03 added to Atlanta’s major league roster
NCAA's career strikeout leader joins Braves bullpen

ATLANTA, Georgia — Marietta College graduate Matt DeSalvo ’03 is back in a major league baseball uniform. On Friday (Aug. 15) evening, the Atlanta Braves purchased the contract of the NCAA’s career win and strikeout leader from Richmond, its Class AAA affiliate. DeSalvo, who is expected to provide depth in the bullpen, replaced Tom Glavine on the roster. Glavine, a 305-game winner and two-time former Cy Young Award winner, returned to the disabled list for the third time this season. This time it was after just one start with the Braves.

DeSalvo, who signed with the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on May 15, 2003, made his major league debut with the Yankees in 2007. The right-hander appeared in seven games and made six starts for New York last summer. He signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves this winter and was invited to spring training before being optioned to Richmond at the start of the season.

DeMark ’06 promoted to Class AA San Antonio Missions
Right-hander worked two scoreless innings in debut on Friday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The San Diego Padres promoted Marietta College graduate Mike DeMark '06 to the San Antonio Missions, its Class AA affiliate in the Texas League, this past week.

DeMark made his debut on Friday (July 29) against the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A counterpart of the Texas Rangers. He threw two scoreless innings in the Missions' 6-3 loss to the RoughRiders. DeMark retired the first four hitters he faced before giving up a one-out single in the seventh. DeMark, however, picked that runner off first base and then struck out the next hitter to get out of the inning unscathed.

Sidick to play in 2008 Frontier League All-Star Game
Washington Wild Thing will have Bobble Head Night on July 27

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Former Marietta College baseball and football standout Chris Sidick '05, a member of the Washington Wild Things, was recently selected to participate in the Frontier League’s 16th annual All-Star Game.

The annual mid-season game, which pits the East Division against West Division, will be played at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, Michigan, on Wednesday July 16, 2008, at 7:05 p.m. [All-Star Announcement]

The Washington Wild Things have also announced that Sunday July 27, 2008, will be Chris Sidick Bobble Head Night. The first 1,000 fans through the gate for the 6:35 p.m. match-up with the Chillicothe Paints will receive a Chris Sidick Bobble Head, courtesy of Alberts Meats.
