Marietta to host several football camps during summer of 2009

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College Head Football Coach Jeff Filkovski and his staff will host several individual and team football camps during the 2009 summer.
Camps include a Youth Camp, ages 6-13, from June 8-11 and two Team Camps from July 26-28 and July 29-31. Filkovski and his staff will also host a camp specifically for quarterbacks and wide receivers, which will take place on August 11.

Junior defensive back George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) and senior linebacker Jamie Schumacher (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) were both named Academic All-OAC honorable mention.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2008 Marietta College football season came to an end on Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon with a 49-0 loss to #1 Mount Union College on Senior Day at Don Drumm Stadium. 11 senior football players were honored before the game for their dedication to the program for the last four years.
Mount Union finished the regular season 10-0, 9-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference to win its 17th straight OAC title. First-year Head Coach Jeff Filkovski's Marietta squad closed the year with a 2-8 record and was 1-8 in the OAC.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College football team suffered a heartbreaking, 42-40 loss to visiting Heidelberg College in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneers (2-7, 1-7 OAC) led their annual Shrine Game, 40-23, with just over seven minutes to play, but the Student Princes (3-6, 2-6 OAC) scored three touchdowns before the final horn sounded to pull out the thrilling victory.
Marietta dominated the time of possession, holding onto the ball for 34:37. The Pioneers, who had a season-high 26 first downs, racked up 234 yards on the ground and 214 through the air to finish with 448 yards of total offense. Heidelberg, who had the ball for 25:23, finished with 450 yards of offense, running for 209 yards and passing for 241 yards. The teams combined for 82 points, including 62 points in the second half.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Football Teams on Thursday (Nov. 6) morning, and Marietta College junior defensive back George Davis (Warren/Newton Falls) was named to the second team in District IV.
Davis, who converted from running back to strong safety in 2008, currently ranks second on the Pioneers’ defense in total tackles with 55; he leads the squad with 37 solo hits. Davis has added 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks this season. He posted a game-high and career-high 11 stops in Marietta’s win over rival Muskingum College in week eight. Davis also led the Pioneers in total tackles against Wilmington College and Baldwin-Wallace College earlier in the year. In addition to leading the defensive secondary, Davis has also spent time returning kickoffs in 2008. The junior has averaged 23.7 yards on 13 returns this season.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College football team suffered a 55-0 loss to host #18 Otterbein College in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Westerville. With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 2-6 overall and 1-6 in league play. The Cardinals remained undefeated at 8-0, 7-0 in the OAC.
Marietta, who turned the ball over four times, finished with 256 yards of total offense; the Pioneers rushed for 152 yards and passed for 104 yards. Otterbein, who had one turnover, collected 285 yards on the ground and 126 yards through the air to finish with 411 yards of total offense.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College freshman wide receiver Jahmaal Jones (Valrico, Fla./Bloomindale) caught a pair of second half touchdown passes from classmate Andrew Keller (Cincinnati/Glen Este) to lead the Pioneer football team to a 30-22 Homecoming victory over visiting Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival Muskingum College Saturday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium.
The Pioneers, who have now defeated the Fighting Muskies on seven straight occasions, improved to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in league play. Muskingum fell to 2-5, 1-5 in the OAC. Six of the previous seven meetings between the two southeast Ohio schools had been decided by less than one score, and Saturday's outcome extended the trend to seven of eight games.

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College football team was kept off the scoreboard for the first time in 2008, as host Ohio Northern University posted a 28-0 victory Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium. The win, improved the Polar Bears' record to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Pioneers fell to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the OAC.
Ohio Northern dominated the statistics on Saturday. The Polar Bears racked up 403 total yards, rushing for 250 yards and passing for 153 yards. Marietta's offense, meanwhile, was held to just 81 total yards. The Pioneers, who had just seven first downs, finished with 97 yards passing and -16 yards rushing.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College football team turned the ball over on six different occasions in a 31-6 loss to visiting Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival John Carroll University Saturday (Oct. 11) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneers fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Marietta's offense racked up 160 yards on the ground and 156 yards through the air to total 316 yards against John Carroll. The Blue Streaks, who led 14-6 at the half, finished with 347 yards of total offense—73 yards rushing and 274 yards passing. For the second straight week, Marietta dominated the time of possession, holding onto the ball for 33:21 while on defense for 26:39.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta College's football team suffered a 38-6 loss to fourth-ranked Capital University on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus. The Pioneers fell to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), while the Crusaders improved to 4-0, 3-0 in league play.
Marietta dominated the time of possession, holding on to the ball for 34:45, but Capital dominated the play on the field, racking up 531 yards of total offense compared to Marietta's 258 yards. The Crusaders finished with 255 yards rushing and 276 yards passing in the win. The Pioneers ran for 85 yards and threw for 173 yards on the day. Capital overcame three lost fumbles, while Marietta turned the ball over twice.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Visiting Baldwin-Wallace College broke open a one-possession game with 28 points in the third quarter en route to a 45-16 victory over host Marietta College on Saturday (Sept. 27) night in front of a River City Bowl crowd at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneers fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Yellow Jackets improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.
Baldwin-Wallace took a 3-0 lead on its opening possession. The Yellow Jackets marched all of the way down to the Pioneers’ seven-yard line before a sack by senior linebacker Grant Cowell (Perrysville/Loudonville) stalled the drive and forced a field goal attempt, which was good from 34 yards by Cory Ramos with 11:13 to play in the first quarter.

Football alumni are encouraged to pre-register for Football Alumni Day or register at the Alumni table on the day of the game. WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College football team was plagued by six turnovers in its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener Saturday (Sept. 20) night, helping host Wilmington College roll to a 34-7 victory in the first night game on the Quakers' campus since 1974. The Pioneers snapped a four-game win streak against the Quakers and fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC. Wilmington improved to 1-1, 1-0 in league play.
Marietta, who turned the ball over three times in each half, finished with 274 total yards—215 yards rushing and 59 yards passing. Wilmington, meanwhile, racked up 346 yards with 114 coming on the ground and 232 coming through the air. Both teams committed 12 penalties in the game; it cost Marietta 109 yards and Wilmington 136 yards.

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Marietta College head football coach Jeff Filkovski needed a last-minute touchdown to pick up his first collegiate victory on Saturday (Sept. 6) afternoon. Fortunately, his offense came through and the Pioneers defeated host Thiel College 21-18 to win their season opener. It is the 13th time in the last 15 years that Marietta has begun the season 1-0.
Despite dominating the statistics throughout the game, Marietta trailed 18-14 with 3:03 left to play. However, junior quarterback Dexter Hughes (Woodsfield/Monroe Central), who finished the game 29-of-43 and threw for 348 yards and two scores, led the Pioneers down the field on a five-play, 58-yard drive. Hughes completed a huge fourth-down pass to freshman Chad Walker (Spring Hill, Fla./Central) to keep the drive alive. He then threw a 42-yard dart to junior Marty Mueller (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) on the next play, which took the ball down to the Thiel one-yard line. Mueller fumbled the ball before he was down but it was picked up in the end zone by freshman Jake Long (Mars, Pa./Pine-Richland) for the game-winning score.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College athletics department announced on Wednesday (Aug. 13) afternoon that its 2008 football home opener against Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival Baldwin-Wallace, slated for Sept. 27, will now kickoff at 7 p.m. The start time was moved back one hour so that the game could be broadcast live, locally in Marietta on WTAP-TV. The broadcast is being sponsored by Gene Haynes '53 and State Farm Insurance.
WTAP will carry the game live on its My 5 station (Channel 5), as well as on its web channel, http://www.wtap.com. The game will re-air that night on Fox Parkersburg (Channel 14) at 11:30 p.m. and then again on Sunday (Sept. 28) at 10 a.m. This will be the second time that WTAP broadcasts a live Marietta College football game; it carried the Pioneers' game against Otterbein College last season.

Pioneers will look for daily improvement this fall

MARIETTA, Ohio — The 2008 Marietta College football team will once again go to battle each week against some of the toughest Division III foes in the country. This fall, first-year Head Coach Jeff Filkovski will be leading the Pioneers’ plan of attack and his experience as both a player and coach has Marietta primed for a successful fight. Filkovski, who quarterbacked Allegheny College to the 1990 national title as a senior, spent time as an assistant with the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe and earned the OAC’s 2007 co-Assistant Coach of the Year while with Heidelberg College.
Filkovski enters the season with an array of returning weapons and is expecting some key newcomers to help provide an immediate impact on Marietta’s game plan. The Pioneers will welcome 70 players back from last year’s squad, which played arguably the toughest schedule in the nation. 13 seniors and 23 lettermen, will make up the core of the returnees.
