Marietta seniors McDaniel and Shaver named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in football
Shaver eligible for Academic All-America honors

Nov. 8, 2007
MARIETTA, Ohio — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released their 2007 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District football teams Thursday (Nov. 8), and Marietta College senior Carter Shaver (Trotwood/Waynesville) earned first team honors while senior Chad McDaniel (Wooster/Triway) earned second team recognition in District IV. Shaver is now eligible for Academic All-America honors.

"This is a great honor for both of these student-athletes," said Head Coach Curt Wiese. "They are role models for our young players, not only on the field but more importantly in the classroom. Chad and Carter exemplify the type of kids we are looking for in our program."

Sports Information Directors from the district (all NCAA Division II, III and NAIA schools in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama) nominate and vote on selections with first team all-district selections moving onto the national ballot. In order to qualify a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve.

Shaver, an Academic All-District second team and Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree in 2006, is one of the defensive co-captains in 2007. The outside linebacker enters the final game of the season and his career ranked fourth on the squad in total tackles with 62. The three-year letterman has added 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He had a career-high 14 tackles at No. 3 Saint Johns in the season opener. In the classroom, the petroleum engineering major carries an impressive 3.87 grade point average. Shaver is also active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

McDaniel, an All-OAC second team selection in 2006, is the offensive captain in 2007. The wide receiver enters his final game as a Pioneer with 37 receptions for 505 yards and one touchdown this fall. He ranks second on the team in both receptions and receiving yards. McDaniel caught a season-high eight passes for 99 yards in the Pioneers' win at Muskingum. Last year, the four-year lettermen set the school record for catches (14) and receiving yards (210) in a game against Otterbein. He is currently third all-time in receptions (130) and receiving yards (1,796) at Marietta.

The football team, who is 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC, closes out the season on Saturday (Nov. 10) with a trip to Alliance, Ohio, to take on No. 1 Mount Union (9-0, 8-0 OAC). Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. The action can be heard locally on WMRT-FM 88.3 and online at http://pioneers.marietta.edu/onlinebroadcasts.html.
