Second half run leads to JCU's 116-96 victory over Marietta
Jan. 8 2005
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS , Ohio - No. 3 John Carroll remained undefeated following a 116-96 victory over Marietta College Saturday (Jan. 8). The Pioneers, who remain in search of that illusive first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victory, hung with the defending OAC champions, but a second half charge propelled the Blue Streaks to the 20-point win.
Marietta (2-11, 0-6 OAC) used the hot shooting of freshman Craig Stewart (Circleville) to climb back from an early 15-3 deficit to tie the score at 38-38 with 4:51 remaining in the first half. JCU (120, 6-0 OAC) however, closed the half on an 11-2 run to enter intermission with a 49-40 lead.
Stewart connected on 3-of-3 from the field, including 2-of-2 from long range in the first 20 minutes, to enter the locker room with a team-high 10 points.
The Blue Streaks began the second period with a 16-5 run to build a 65-45 lead and take complete control of the momentum. JCU increased its lead to as many as 29 points down the stretch before time ran out and the final score gave the Blue Streaks a 116-96 win.
Stewart and senior Matt Hines (Waverly/Eastern Pike) each finished with a team-high 16 for Marietta. Freshman Josh Hull (Nitro, WV/Poca) added 15 and senior Chris Fulton (West Milton/Milton Union) had 10 in the loss.
John Carroll had five players finish in double figures and was led by Brandon Mimes with 20 points and eight boards.
The Pioneers will head to Mount Union Wednesday (Jan. 12) to battle the Purple Raiders at 7:30 p.m., before returning home to host Baldwin-Wallace on Alumni Day, Saturday (Jan. 15) at 3 p.m.
