Purple Raiders defeat Marietta 112-96 in men's hoops

ALLIANCE , Ohio - Junior Kyle Karpinski's career-high 33-point performance helped lead the Purple Raiders to a 112-98 victory over visiting Marietta College in men's basketball Ohio Athletic Conference action Wednesday (Jan. 12).
The Pioneers (2-12, 0-7 OAC) held its only lead of the night, 13-12, early in the first half and Mount Union (7-7, 3-4 OAC) went up by as many was 17 in the second frame. The Raiders shot 39-of-65 (60.0%) from the field and knocked down 33-of-53 (62.3%) from the line. Marietta shot 37-of-85 (43.5%) from the floor, including 12-of-39 (30.8%) from beyond the arc in the loss.
Freshman Craig Stewart (Circleville) had the hot hand for Marietta tonight, connecting on 7-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-11 from 3-point range to finish with 21 points.
Senior Matt Hines (Waverly/Eastern Pike) added 16 points and six boards, while sophomore Chad Sponseller (Canton/GlenOak) and freshman Josh Hull (Nitro, WV/Poca) each finished with 12 points in the loss.
Karpinski led the Raiders with his 33 points, while teammates Josh Long (16) and Jason Smith (19) also scored career-highs Wednesday.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday (Jan. 15) when they play host to Baldwin-Wallace on Alumni Day. Tip-off of the varsity game will be at 3 p.m. An alumni game will start at 1 p.m. on Fenton Court. |
