Mount Union explodes in second half to defeat Pioneers 107-88

MARIETTA , Ohio - A close game at the half turned into an easy 107-88 victory for Mount Union over Marietta this evening (Jan. 26) on Fenton Court. The Purple Raiders led 44-39 at intermission, but outscored the Pioneers 63-49 to leave town with the 19-point victory.
Marietta (2-16, 0-11 OAC) shot 25-of-79 (31.6%) from the floor, 14-of-43 (32.6%) from long range and 24-of-28 (85.7%) from the line. It committed 25 turnovers and had 18 steals.
Mount Union finished 41-of-66 (62.1%) from the field, 6-of-11 (54.5%) from beyond the arc and 19-of-27 (70.4%) from the line. The Raiders committed 27 turnovers and out rebounded MC 44-40.
Kyle Karpinski paced Mount Union with 31 points and eight rebounds. Brad Gerard added 17 points, Josh Long finished with 14 and Clay Long pitched in with 11. Tony Basalla dished out a game-high eight assists in the win.
Marietta was led by freshman Craig Stewart (Circleville), who connected on 4-of-9 three-pointers and finished with 17. Josh Hull (Nitro, WV/Poca) also hit four three-pointers and added 15 points. Chad Sponseller (Canton/GlenOak) scored 11 and Sam Rutherford (Newport/Frontier) had 10 in the loss.
The Pioneers will visit No. 15 Berea to take on Baldwin-Wallace Saturday (Jan. 29) at 3 p.m.
