Quakers counter MC's Fun and Gun with their own three-point assault in Pioneers' season finale

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Pioneers concluded their 2004-05 season on the road against Wilmington Saturday (Feb. 19). Marietta held the lead for most of the game, but the Quakers took control with 1:07 to play and held on for the 97-92 win to steal the victory from the Pioneers.
Marietta's pressure forced 17 turnovers and its shooters knocked down nine three-pointers in the first half to give the Pioneers a 46-38 halftime lead. They were able to increase their advantage to 17 points, 65-48 within the first five minutes of the second stanza.
The Quakers (10-15, 6-12 OAC) finally cut the lead to single digits with 9:42 to play in the game and then went ahead for good with a three-pointer by senior David Guy with 1:07 remaining in the contest.
Marietta (3-22, 1-17 OAC) finished the day 32-of-82 (39.0%) from the field and 12-of-15 (80.0%) from the line. It also connected on 16-of-51 (31.4%) from long range. Wilmington made 32-of-66 (48.5%) of its field goals, including 10-of-18 (55.6%) from beyond the arc. The Quakers also hit 23-of-28 (82.1%) from the charity stripe and out rebounded Marietta 49-38. Wilmington finished with 25 turnovers, while Marietta had 14.
Guy led all scorers with a career-high 37 points. Three of his teammates, Deon Short (16), Fred Harrison (13) and Josh Rohrbacher (12) also finished in double figures.
Marietta was paced by sophomore Chad Sponseller (Canton/GlenOak) with 14, freshman Craig Stewart (Circleville) with 13 and senior Matt Hines (Waverly/Eastern Pike) with 10 points, respectively.
Hines finished his Pioneer career with 1,430 points, which ranks him seventh all-time at Marietta College. Stewart finished his first season as the Pioneers' new single-season leader in three-point attempts (250) and three-point field goals (85).
As a team, the Pioneers set new OAC records in three-point shooting, finishing the year 358-of-1,174; both the three-point attempts and made are Conference records. Marietta also set the single-season school record for points per game (98.4), steals (304), field goals (853) and field goals attempted (2,183). |
