Pioneers fall to Ohio Northern 122-99 in OAC home opener

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Marietta College men's basketball team dropped its Ohio Athletic Conference home opener to Ohio Northern 122-99 Saturday (Dec. 10) on Fenton Court.
The Pioneers (2-6, 0-3 OAC) opened the game with a 19-6 run over the first 5:38 and led 34-23 at the midway point of the half. The Polar Bears (7-0, 2-0 OAC) clawed their way back with a 14-1 run to claim a 37-35 advantage less than three minute later and entered the locker room ahead 58-51.
Marietta pulled within three points, 58-55, with 19:07 remaining in the game, but could not get any closer. Ohio Northern led by as many as 28 points in the final frame en route to a 122-99 victory.
As a team, the Pioneers finished 34-of-68 (.500) from the field, 8-of-29 (.276) from long range and 23-of-42 (.548) from the line. Ohio Northern went 50-of-75 (.667) from the floor, 2-of-3 (.667) from three-point range and 20-of-35 (.571) from the charity stripe.
The Polar Bears won the rebounding battle 44-32 and forced 29 turnovers while committing 25. ONU also finished with 20 steals and Marietta had nine.
Chad Sponseller (Canton/GlenOak) hit four three-pointers to finish with a team-high 21 points. Sophomore Matt Phillips (Williamson, W. Va./Tug Valley) added a career-high 19 points, while sophomores Craig Stewart (Circleville) and Andrew Good (Bexley) finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Ohio Northern was paced by Greg Badenhop, who was one rebound shy of a triple-double. Badenhop had 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. Kyle Gehle (22), Ryan Lee (20), Bart Hostetler (16) and Jake Cannan (15) all finished in double-figures.
Marietta will return to action Saturday (Dec. 17) when it travels to Wilmington to take on the Quakers at 3 p.m.
