Championship Game: Adrian 96, Marietta 89
Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio - Marietta College's struggles early in the second half allowed Adrian (Mich.) College to capture the title of the 35th Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament Friday (Dec. 30) evening.

The Pioneers (3-8) opened the game with a 11-4 lead behind a pair of three-pointers by Chad Sponseller and five points by Matt Rucker. The Bulldogs (6-5) tied the score at 15-15 with 15:13 to play in the half and took the lead for good with a Billy Collins free throw five minutes later.

Marietta remained close for the final 10 minutes of the half, but an 8-0 run by Adrian gave them a 54-46 lead at intermission.

The Bulldogs extended that run to 18 straight points once they came back out in the second half, as the Pioneers went scoreless for the first 3:22 of the period. Marietta was able to climb back within three points, 92-86, with 23 second to go in the game, but Adrian held on for the win.

Jeff Nokovich had a game to remember, coming two rebounds shy of a triple-double before fouling out in the final minutes. Nokovich was given the Cliff Rose Most Valuable Player Award after finishing with 17 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and three steals.

Collins finished with a game-high 29 points, 24 of which came in the first half. He was also named to the All-Tournament team. Teammates Steve Thornton and Mike Reinhard each added 15 points in the victory.

Marietta was paced by the outside shooting of Craig Stewart, who hit four three-pointers and finished with 19 points. Matt Phillips had another solid game, collecting 16 points and nine rebounds, while Adam Rockhold and Kyle Reed added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Steve Luckhardt had seven assists in the loss.

Consolation Game: Bridgewater 71, Grove City 67
Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio - It was another exciting game at the 35th Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament, as Bridgewater (Va.) fought back from a second-half deficit to sneak past Grove City (Pa.), 71-67, in the consolation game.

It was a low-scoring first half for both teams. Bridgewater's Josh Maupin tied the game at 29-29 with a three-point basket in the final seconds.

A lay-up by Chuck Cotherman gave Grove City (3-7) the 31-29 advantage in the opening seconds of the final period, a lead that they increased to seven points, 48-41, with 9:34 on the clock.

Bridgewater (4-5) fought back to tie the contest at 58-58 at the 4:18 mark. A pair of free throws by Clay Michael gave the Eagles the lead for good, 61-60 with 2:22 to play and they held on for the four-point victory.

Clay finished with a game-high 21 points, while adding seven rebounds to earn All-Tournament Team honors. Maupin added 15 points, Josh Fox had 12 and Jay Strotman finished with 10 in the win.

Grove City was paced by three players in double figures. Mark Smith and Shawn Carr each had 11 points and John Scheller finished with 10 for the Wolverines. All 12 players who saw minutes scored for Grove City.

Game 2: Marietta 90, Grove City 81
Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio - College basketball is a game of adjustments and Marietta head coach Doug Foote took full advantage of this and it resulted in a 90-81 victory over Grove City (Pa.) College in the opening round of the 35th Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament tonight.

With year-two of the Fun & Gun off to a slow start, Foote mixed up his game plan against the Wolverines and it worked. Marietta (3-7, 0-4 OAC), who usually subs in groups of five every few minutes, had a more traditional substitute pattern Thursday. Playing mainly veterans, the Pioneers had the intensity needed and executed a balance of inside and outside play against Grove City (3-6).

Action was tight over the first 20 minutes, with Marietta taking a 41-39 lead into intermission as a result of a three-pointer by sophomore Seth Amburgey (Champmanville, W. Va.) with time running out.

The Pioneers never relinquished that advantage, extending their lead to as many as 10 points in the second half en route to a 90-81 win.

Junior Matt Rucker (Proctorville/Chesapeake) made the most of his opportunities, finishing 7-of-9 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the line to score a game-high 22 points. He also added 10 rebounds (eight offensive), four assists and four blocks.

Sophomore Matt Phillips (Williamson, W. Va./Tug Valley) hit four three-pointers to finished with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Sophomore Craig Stewart (Circleville) added 14 points on four more three-pointers and had four steals, while junior Ryan Wilkinson (Wilmington/Clinton Massie) contributed 10 points, seven assists and four steals in the win.

Grove City was paced by Craig Hallman with a career-best 20 points. He also added 10 rebounds. Chuck Cotherman added 13 points, while Joe Capotosta, Matt Phiilps and Mark Smith each finished with 10 points.

As a team, Marietta finished 29-of-78 (.372) from the field, including 13-of-41 (.317) from long range to go along with 19-of-24 (.792) from the line. Grove City went 31-of-61 (.508) from the floor, 4-of-10 (.400) from beyond the arc and 15-of-18 (.833) from the charity stripe.

The Wolverines out rebounded the Pioneers 41-40, but MC had 19 offensive boards compared to GCC's 11. Marietta also forced Grove City into 28 turnovers and had 16 steals in the win.

With the win, Marietta advances to the championship game against Adrian (Mich.) tomorrow at 7 p.m. Adrian needed a bucket as time expired to defeat Bridgewater (Va.) 64-62 in game one. The Wolverines and Eagles will meet in the consolation at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Adrian 64, Bridgewater 62
Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio - Ian Weber had the type of all-around game that is expected of him each time he puts on a uniform for the Adrian (Mich.) College basketball team.

However, the 6-foot-6 forward was still mobbed by his Bulldog teammates after making a clutch lay up with one second remaining to lift Adrian to a 64-62 victory over Bridgewater (Va.) Eagles in the first round of the 35th annual Marietta College Shrine Tournament on Thursday (Dec. 29).

It didn’t appear Adrian would need Weber’s heroics on this night at Fenton Court. The Bulldogs (5-5) never trailed the Eagles (3-5), but squandered an eight-point lead with just more than three minutes to play.

Bridgewater chipped at the lead and tied the game at 62 when Josh Maupin drilled a three-point basket with nine seconds to play. But Weber’s basket on a nice pass from Jeff Nokovich sealed the Bulldogs’ victory.

Weber paced Adrian with 12 points and seven rebounds, while 6-8 junior Steve Thornton had 12 points. Mike Reinhard, a 6-0 freshman, added 10 points and two steals.

Bridgewater was paced by Clay Michael, a 6-7 senior forward, who led all scorers with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Maupin, a 6-0 junior forward, chipped in with 10 points and two steals.

Adrian led 29-22 after a sloppy first half. The Bulldogs also led by as many as 15 in the second half. Bridgewater still shot an impressive 48 percent from the field and 84 percent from the foul line.

Adrian will face the Marietta-Grove City winner at 7 p.m. Friday (Dec. 30), while Bridgewater plays in the consolation at 5 p.m.
