Strong second half helps Mount Union defeat Marietta men, 69-56
Pioneers will host Baldwin-Wallace Saturday in season finale

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team closed out the road portion of its 2006-07 schedule with a 69-56 loss at Mount Union College Thursday (Feb. 15) in a game that was moved from Wednesday due to bad weather. [Box Score]
The Pioneers (5-19, 1-16 OAC) will finish its season at home Saturday (Feb. 17) against Baldwin-Wallace. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. Saturday will be Senior Day and Dream to Read Day.
Mount Union (10-14, 5-12 OAC) jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the first 11:36 only for Marietta close the half on a 21-6 run and take a 31-26 lead into intermission. The Pioneers increased their lead to 10 points, 36-26, in the early moments of the final half, but the Purple Raiders fought back to take a 46-44 advantage with 11:06 left to play in the game. Marietta held a slim, 53-52, lead with 6:19 left on the clock, but Mount Union ended the game on a 17-3 run to secure the victory.
The Pioneers finished the night 21-of-43 (.488) from the field, including 9-of-19 (.474) from long range. The Purple Raiders connected on 25-of-47 (.532) shots, including 6-of-13 (.462) from deep. Mount Union forced 18 turnovers, while Marietta forced 10 in a game that had each team finish with 25 rebounds.
Sophomore Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) paced Marietta with 14 points, while junior Matt Phillips(Williamson, W.Va./Tug Valley) and sophomore Tyler Morando (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central) each had nine and senior Matt Rucker (Proctorville/Chesapeake) added eight.
Four Purple Raiders reached double figures. Stu Anglum scored a game-high 19 points, Eric Fender contributed 18 and Luke Conley and Jay Mathis each finished with 10. |
