Pioneers can't overcome slow first half, fall to Heidelberg 86-63

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's basketball team played visiting Heidelberg College almost even for the final 20 minutes. It was the initial 20 minutes, however, that allowed the Student Princes to defeat the Pioneers 86-63 Saturday (Dec. 15) afternoon on Fenton Court.
The win improved Heidelberg's record to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Marietta fell to 2-7, 0-4 in league play.
Marietta, who trailed 46-24 at intermission, finished the day 25-of-66 (.379) from the field, including 6-of-15 (.400) from long range. The Pioneers, who turned the ball over 18 times, added 7-of-8 (.875) from the line. Heidelberg went 33-of-64 (.516) from the floor, including 9-of-19 (.474) from deep. The Student Princes, who turned the ball over 19 times, added 11-of-14 (.786) from the line. Heidelberg dominated the boards, out rebounding Marietta 46-28.
Senior center Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) paced Marietta with 17 points, eight boards, two blocks and four steals. Junior forward Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier) and freshman forward Bradley Hinton (McDonald) both added 12 points. Hinton also contributed five rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Johnson (Reynoldsburg) dished out a team-high six assists in the loss.
Heidelberg was led by junior guard Chad Szalay with 22 points. Senior Shawn Shriver added 14 points, while senior Brian Schmidt contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Marietta's next action will take place during its annual Shrine Tournament, which will be held Dec. 29-30. This year's four-team event is a classic with all four games predetermined. The Pioneers battle Waynesburg (Pa.) Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. and then play host to Grove City Dec. 30 at 4 p.m.
