Marietta men fall to Muskingum 86-73
Four Pioneers reach double figures in loss

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men’s basketball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) game to visiting Muskingum College, 86-73, Wednesday (Jan. 9) night at Ban Johnson Arena. The loss drops the Pioneers’ record to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the OAC. Muskingum improves to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the OAC.
Marietta finished the night 27-of-58 (.466) from the floor, including 10-of-18 (.556) from long range, to go along with 9-of-12 (.750) from the line. The Pioneers turned the ball over 11 times. Muskingum went 32-of-63 (.508) from the field, 4-of-14 (.286) from deep and 18-of-26 (.692) from the line. The Muskies had six turnovers and out rebounded the Pioneers 38-30 in the win.
Senior Adam Rockhold (Olmsted Falls) led the Pioneers with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Freshman guard Nathan Edick (Westerville/Thomas Worthington) scored 12 points, shooting 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Junior Daun Lutes (New Matamoras/Frontier) scored 11 points and collected a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman guard Jordan Cox (West Union) also chipped in 11 points in the loss.
Pat Byrne led five double figure scorers for the Fighting Muskies with 16 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Todd, Trevor Scott, and Tyler Felt each scored 13 points for Muskingum. Todd also dished out nine assists in the win. Ben Miller rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points.
The first five minutes of the contest went back and forth, as the Muskies and Pioneers traded hoops early. Muskingum used its inside game and some key bench scoring to build a 16-point lead at the half. Muskingum held a steady double-digit lead through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Marietta cut the lead down to seven with three minutes remaining, but Muskingum hit its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 13-point win.
The Pioneers are on the road Saturday (Jan. 12) as they visit OAC foe John Carroll. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. |
