Creasap eclipses 1,000 career points as Marietta defeats Mount Union 86-73
Senior becomes 27th Marietta player to go over the 1,000-point mark

Jan. 14, 2009
ALLIANCE, Ohio — With 8:55 to play in the second half of Wednesday (Jan. 14) night's Marietta College 86-73 victory over Mount Union, Pioneer senior guard Isaiah Creasap (Wooster/Northwestern) drained a three-pointer to give the Pioneers a 69-62 lead in a crucial Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) road game. That bucket, which gave him 1,001 career points, also put Creasap among the elite players in Marietta College history, as he became the 27th player to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for a career and the first since Matt Hines '05 did it during the 2003-04 season.

The win improved Marietta's record to 7-7 overall and 2-5 in the OAC, while Mount Union fell to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. The victory also gave the young Pioneers their most wins in a season since finishing 10-16 in 2003-04.

Mount Union’s Luke Conley started the game with a three-point play to give the Purple Raiders an early 3-0 lead. Marietta then went on a 16-0 run over the next seven minutes to claim a 16-3 advantage with 12:32 left in the first half. The Purple Raiders responded with a 22-6 over the next six and one-half minutes to reclaim the lead, 25-22, with 6:06 left before intermission. A full timeout by Pioneer Head Coach Jon VanderWal sparked his team to a 19-8 to close the half, giving the Pioneers a 41-33 lead at the break.

Marietta used the momentum from its late first-half run to extend its lead to 14 points, 58-44, with 15:09 remaining in the game. Mount Union slowly chipped away at the lead throughout the period, cutting it down to four points, 66-62, with 9:11 to play. Creasap's three-pointer stretched his team's lead back to seven points, 69-62, and gave the Pioneers some breathing room. The Purple Raiders again cut the lead to four points, 71-67, this time with 4:01 remaining in the game. Freshman Kevin Knab (Lakewood) then scored seven of the Pioneers' final 15 points to secure Marietta's 13-point victory.

Knab recorded his first career double-double. He scored a career-high 22 points while collecting 10 rebounds. Freshman Trevor Halter (Malvern), the team's leading scorer, chipped in with 16 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Creasap added 15 points off the bench, while freshman guard Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Kilbourne) scored 13 points in the win.

Chris Switzer led Mount Union with 20 points. Ben Hodkinson was the only other Purple Raider in double figures. He scored 13 points in the loss.

Marietta finished the game shooting 25-of-49 (.510) from the field, 8-of-19 (.421) from behind the arc and 28-of-29 (.966) from the free throw line. The Purple Raiders shot 25-of-60 (.417) from the field, 8-of-26 (.308) from behind the arc and 15-of-21 (.714) from the free throw line. The Pioneers held the edge on the boards, 35-27, and committed 12 turnovers to Mount Union's 15.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 17) when they host Baldwin-Wallace College on Fenton Court at 3 p.m.
