BEREA, Ohio — Three Marietta College freshmen scored double digits in the men's basketball team's 76-64 loss at Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 12-13 overall and finished the year with a 7-11 record in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Yellow Jackets ended their season 8-17 overall and 4-14 in the OAC.
Marietta, who locked up the #6 seed earlier in the week, now turns its attention to Wednesday (Feb. 25) night's OAC Tournament Quarterfinal game and a match-up at #3 seed Ohio Northern University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. The teams split the season series with both squads earning road victories. ONU won the first meeting, 74-49, in Marietta on Dec. 6, while the Pioneers won 69-67 in Ada on Jan. 24.
Baldwin-Wallace, who led wire-to-wire, started Saturday's game on a 17-4 run. The Yellow Jackets led by double-figures for most of the first half, extending the advantage to as many as 15 points, 40-25, with 20 seconds left in the period. Freshman wing Trevor Halter (Malvern), who hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, led the Pioneers with 19 points. Freshman post Kevin Knab (Lakewood) added 18 points with four rebounds and a game-high five assists. Freshman post Conner Kilpatrick (Bowling Green) chipped in with 11 points in the loss.
Andrew Bene became the 36th player in Baldwin-Wallace history to reach 1,000 career points and paced the Yellow Jackets with 31 points and 15 rebounds. Promis Cabbil and Dennis Santiago both scored 12 points in the victory.
Marietta finished 23-of-51 (.451) from the field, 7-of-22 (.318) from three-point range and 11-of-17 (.647) from the free throw line.
