MC gets spring tune-up at 11th annual Ohio Valley Indoor Rowing Championships

MARIETTA, Ohio - Signals that the Pioneer Navy are one step closer to beginning its spring season occurred Saturday (Feb. 12) when Marietta Colleg held the 11th annual Ohio Valley Indoor Rowing Championships in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.

Over 140 athletes, representing eight organizations competed in 21 events Saturday, which included high school, collegiate and other athletes. All races were 2,000 meters, except the coxswains sprints.

The men's squad had an excellent showing at the event, taking the top spot in each of the six races it had a competitor.

Freshman Tom Gray (Boulder, CO/Alexander Dawson) took first place in the Freshmen/Novice Lightweight division, erging to a time of 6:41.7.

Freshman Justin Callahan (Winter Park, FL) placed first in the Freshmen/Novice Heavyweight race with a time of 6:22.9.

Peter Lorenz (Danville, CA/The Gunnery), a sophomore, took the Lightweight title after erging the 2,000m in 6:39.7. He just nipped teammate Matt Henwood (Malvern, PA/LaSalle). The senior finished in 6:39.9 to place second.

Senior Rob Johnson (Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) won the Men's Open with a time of 6:13.5.

The coxswains 1,000m sprint was won by Joseph Lincke (Woodlyn, PA/Bonner), who finished with a time of 3:35.0.

Marietta wrapped up the competition with a the Open Relay. The Pioneers had seven entries into the event and Team 3 took home the top time, 5:50.6. Team 1's time was not recorded due to a computer malfunction.

The Pioneer Navy will continue its preseason workouts in preparation for its spring training trip to Miami Beach, FL (Mar. 4-13). Marietta will workout on the Indian Creek (Intracostal Waterway) and then close out the week with scrimmage races on the Indian River (Mar. 12).
