Marietta College alum Andrew Bolton finishes second in lightweight single at 2006 USRowing November Small Boats Regatta
2002 graduate just five seconds behind two-time Olympian in 7k race

Nov. 27, 2006
PRINCETON, N.J. — Rowers with 2007 National Team aspirations hit the water on Saturday (Nov. 18) at Carnegie Lake for the 2006 USRowing November Small Boats Regatta. The regatta, which included racing in seven boat categories, was the final opportunity for athletes to test their speed going into the winter training season.

2002 Marietta College graduate Andrew Bolton set out looking to make a statement against two-time Olympian Steve Tucker, one of the nation’s most renown rowers, in the lightweight men's single sculls. Tucker, a member of the National Team from 1997-2005 who rowed in the lightweight double sculls in both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, held off the younger Bolton, barely. Tucker, who had not been challenged in the event for the last decade, covered the course in a 26:56.57, finishing less than five seconds ahead of Bolton, who was rowing for the New York Athletic Club. Bolton finished with a time of 27:01.06.

Another former Pioneer Navy rower Matt Henwood ’05 took 17th in the 27-boat field. Henwood, who was rowing for the Fairmont Rowing Association, finished in 28:06.072.

The seven-kilometer races served as a chance for rowers to gauge where they stand heading into winter training and was an opportunity to earn performance-based funding. The winning boats in each event earned $2,000 per seat, while the second-place finishers earned $1,000 per seat. In total, 191 boats and 220 athletes entered the regatta.
