Cottrell hired as Marietta College men’s rowing assistant
University of North Carolina graduate will coach Pioneer Navy’s freshmen

Aug. 10, 2008
MARIETTA, Ohio — Adam Cottrell, former men’s freshmen rowing coach at the University of North Carolina, has joined the Marietta College men’s rowing program. Cottrell will serve in the same capacity as freshmen coach with the Pioneer Navy.

“I am excited for Adam to join the staff,” Head Coach Chris Pucella said. “In his two years at UNC, he has shown the ability to train a novice crew that can compete at the top level of the Dad Vail Championship.”

Cottrell led the freshmen program at Chapel Hill for the last two seasons. During his time on staff, UNC won bronze medals in the freshmen eight at both the 2007 and 2008 Knecht Cup. It also claimed a pair of fourth place finishes at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta.

A 2006 graduate of UNC, Cottrell rowed for three seasons with the UNC men’s club team. He rowed in a lightweight boat as a freshman and then was a coxswain as both a sophomore and junior. Cottrell then helped manage and coach the team as a senior.

Cottrell earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from UNC in 2006 and a Masters of Art in Teaching, specializing in secondary science, from UNC in 2007.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to coach at Marietta College under Chris,” said Cottrell. “The Pioneers have a strong tradition of rowing and all the tools needed to compete at a high level. I look forward to the upcoming season and the chance to continue that tradition of success through the development of the freshmen squad.”

Marietta will compete in five races during its 2008 fall season. The Pioneers open the year with the Hobart & William Smith Challenge on the Canal, which takes place on Oct. 4 in Geneva, N.Y. Marietta will then compete at the Head of the Genesee on Oct. 12 in Rochester, N.Y. The freshmen are slated to race at the University of Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., on Nov. 1. The whole team will close out the fall with a weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. Marietta will compete at the Frostbite Regatta on Nov. 18 and then the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta on Nov. 19.
