New season, familiar result for MC men's soccer at MC
Classic - tie Carthage (WI) 1-1
Sept. 3, 2004
MARIETTA,Ohio
- Head coach Pat Holguin and his men's soccer team hope
that their first game is not a sign of things to come, as they fought
hard for 90 minutes only to end in a 1-1 tie against Carthage (WI) today
(Sept. 3) at Don Drumm Stadium.
The Pioneers
(0-0-1), who set a school-record for ties in a season last year with
five, had control of the game for 75 minutes, but could not put the
Redmen away down the stretch, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
"This was a
very physical game," said Holguin. "We controlled the tempo for most of
the game, but Carthage is a very experienced team and battled back at
the end to force the tie."
Senior
Matt Molesworth (Bakersfield, CA) scored the lone goal for the
Pioneers in the eighth minute of the first half. Sophomore Mike
Zourdos (Potomac, MD) picked up the assist when Molesworth
scored on the header.
Matt
Pomeroy (Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley)
had the game-tying goal for Carthage in the seventy-sixth minute.
Marietta
goalkeeper Adam Cervenka (Mentor) finished the day with
16 saves, while his counterpart Dan Scalan (New Lenox,
IL/Lincoln Way) had nine for the Redmen.
"Carthage was
a good tune-up for a Wooster on Sunday," added Holguin. "The men are
going to have to play solid for 90 minutes."
The Pioneers
will take on Wooster Sunday (Sept. 5) at Don Drumm Stadium. Game time is
slated for 2 p.m. Carthage will battle Wooster tomorrow at 5 p.m. in
Devola.
