MC men's soccer wins tournament title with 2-0 victory

Sept. 12, 2004
ALTOONA, PA- The Marietta College men's soccer team picked up two victories this weekend (Sept. 11-12) to win the inaugural Hoss's/Comfort Inn Lion Challenge Invitational Soccer Tournament, hosted by Penn State-Altoona.

The Pioneers (2-1-1) earned the chance to play for the championship via a 1-0 victory over Juniata (PA) on Saturday afternoon, and then captured the title by defeating host Penn State-Altoona 2-0 on Sunday.

Marcos Vaca (Friendswood, TX) broke the scoreless tie on a penalty kick in the 69th minute in Friday's victory over the Eagles. The goal was his first of the season.

Adam Cervenka (Mentor) collected his first shut out of the year, facing five shots and making two saves in the win.

Marietta returned to action Sunday afternoon to battle the Lions for the tournament title. Coach Pat Holguin's defense once again controlled the game, until the offense broke loose for two second half goals to give MC the 2-0 victory.

Cervenka collected six saves and his second straight shutout-victory.

Junior Brad Maddox (Nitro, WV) put the Pioneers on the board in the 54th minute with his first goal of the season. Sophomore Mike Zourdos (Potomac, MD) assisted Maddox on the goal.

Marietta struck again in the 87th minute when senior Alex Hohman (Louisville, KY/DuPont Manual) assisted freshman Josh Mains (Trafford, PA) on his first collegiate goal.

Senior defender Joe Bothner (Friendswood, TX) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for his efforts this weekend.

The Pioneers will look to carry the momentum into Tuesday's (Sept. 16) game at Urbana. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
