Sept. 16, 2004
URBANA, Ohio - Coach Pat Holguin's men's soccer team came within 19 seconds of tie with Urbana tonight (Sept. 16), but a late Blue Knight goal sent the Pioneers home with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss.
The Pioneers (2-2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the first half, when senior Ray Kurek (Friendswood, TX/Clear Brook) scored off an assist from junior Brad Maddox (Nitro, WV).
Marietta's lead lasted for just nine minutes, as Urbana (3-2-1) evened the score with a goal by Pat Thompson. The two team remained tied for the next 93 minutes, until Josh Baskin gave Urbana the lead and the win with 19 seconds left on the clock.
Both teams finished with 14 shots. Pioneer goalkeeper Adam Cervenka (Mentor) made eight saves in 120 minutes in front of the net.
The Pioneers will look to rebound Saturday (Sept. 18) when they travel to Meadville, PA, to take on Allegheny at 3 p.m.
